First published in 1998, this volume explores how the genre of school stories had become firmly established by the turn of the twentieth century, having been built on the foundations laid by writers such as Thomas Hughes and F.W. Farrar. Stories for girls were also taking on a more exciting complexion, inspired by the ‘Katy’ books of Susan Coolidge. The first five decades of the twentieth century saw further developments in children’s fiction. In this comprehensive volume, John and Jonathan Cooper examine each decade in turn, with alphabetically arranged entries on popular children’s writers that published works in English during that period. 206 different authors are covered, many from the United States and Canada. Each entry provides information on the author’s pseudonyms, date of birth, nationality, titles of works, place and date of publication and the publisher’s name. The artist responsible for a book’s illustrations is also identified where possible. With over 200 illustrations of cover designs and dustwrappers, many of which are now rare and have never before been published, this book will delight collectors, dealers, scholars, librarians, parents and all those who simply enjoy reading children’s fiction.

Essays on authors and poets in this volume represent some of the best-known writers of children's literature in the twentieth century. This period is marked by certain characteristics, such as stories of groups of children bonded together, the emergence of strong female protagonists, the "career books", and a consciously subdued presence of pain and suffering. Many of these works are valued for the window they provided upon a culture now gone

Not illustrated. 1900 edition. Excerpt: ...FOR GOODENOUGH. These were speedily removed; but the offenders (T. Stevens and Pulling) were not discovered, though they had very nearly run into the Warden's arms with the posters in their hands. After prayers there was a more or less general shaking of hands with the hoys and the Masters and Warden when present. On Saturday the Warden and Masters dined together in Hall, and the Warden took prayers. The handshaking was on these occasions a big business, as it included the Warden and Head as a matter of course, at least some of the other Masters, and sometimes even guests. The Fifth and lower Forms went to bed at 8.45, the rest had a supper of bread and cheese and beer in Hall. The Lower Sixth sat up till io, the Upper Sixth till 10.30. Besides the three half-holidays there was a whole holiday every saint's day and holy day. Whole holidays were chiefly spent in matches and excursions. In 1862 the Wednesday after Whit-Tuesday was a saint's day, and there were thivo cricket-matches on consecutive days and Bradneld won them all. Whit-Monday and St. Andrew's Day were the great days for Old Boys, the O.B.B.s' cricket and football matches being then played. Old Boys sometimes came down on Whitsun Eve and stayed till Tuesday. Altogether it was a delightful time. Whole holidays were also given when a boy got a scholarship at the Universities, and half-holidays sometimes at the request of some distinguished visitor, and often for skating in Denning's time. Up to 1864 inclusive, the year was divided more or less definitely into halves, there being comparatively short Easter holidays, and the summer holiday beginning, as at Winchester, early in July, Commemoration Day being on July 4 or the following Thursday. In 1865 the definite division into...
