In more than half a century, the image of women in advertising has improved considerably, it is obvious that it can still be improved, but progress has been made. The woman is no longer this jug proud of her household at the exclusive service of her man and children. She is now (most of the time) a little freer but still largely subservient to her household.

The study of advertising and its treatment of utopian appeal enhance our understanding of consumer culture. By looking into the advertising page, we also look into consumers’ desires and the process by which these desires are reshaped and rechanneled through images and narratives created solely for the purpose of making a sale. Utopian Images and Narratives in Advertising: Dreams for Sale, edited by Luigi Manca, Alessandra Manca, and Gail W. Pieper, is a collection of essays which gather a host of academicians from a wide variety of disciplines including sociology, psychology, literature, fine arts, history, religious studies, communication, and media studies. Through their expansive disciplinary expertise, the contributors bring unique insights to the analysis of the advertising page. The collection’s cross-disciplinary investigation also examines gender images and narratives which, in the advertising page, are frequently associated with utopian fantasies. The analyses offered in Utopian Images and Narratives in Advertising will appeal to any scholar or student engaged in mass media, communication, and the effect of advertising and consumerism on individuals and cultures.

Abstract: This thesis covers two main subjects by dealing with semiotics and focusing on advertising. The mass-medium advertising helps spread ideologies. One of the two main objectives of this thesis is the analysis of discriminating and [...]

This fascinating book explores the way that Sherlock Holmes has been appropriated by British businesses to advertise everything from carpets and tyres, to honey and whisky. Somerset Maugham believed that Holmes had survived so long in the public imagination because Arthur Conan Doyle had hammered the detective's idiosyncracies into the minds of his readers with ‘the same pertinacity as the great advertisers use to proclaim the merits of their soap, beer or cigarettes'. Linking Holmes with consumer products in this way implies that the detective was becoming a ‘brand’ in his own right. But if he was a brand, then what values did he portray? Why would advertisers want to associate those values with their own products - even if those products had, on the face of it, nothing whatsoever to do with Sherlock Holmes? And how did they go about it? The book draws on a treasure-trove of advertisements in the Arthur Conan Doyle Collection - Richard Lancelyn Green Bequest at Portsmouth Museum.

The Advertising Handbook is a critical introduction to the practices and perspectives of the advertising industry. Sean Brierley explores the structures of the profession and examines the roles of all those involved in advertising including businesses, agencies, consultancies and media owners. The Advertising Handbook traces the development of advertising and examines the changes that have take taken place from its formative years through to today's period of rapid change: the impact of new media, the rise of the ad agency, industry mergers, the Internet and digital technologies, and the influence of the regulatory environment. The Advertising Handbook offers a theoretical understanding of the industry and it challenges many assumptions about advertising's power and authority. Thoroughly revised and updated, it examines why companies and organisations advertise, how they research markets, where and when they advertise, the principles and techniques of persuasion and how companies measure performance. The Advertising Handbook includes: Illustrations from a range of high-profile campaigns including Budweiser, Barnardo's, Benetton and Club 18-30 New and detailed 'workshop' exercises accompanying each chapter Case studies and profiles of ad agencies and key media players A revised and up-to-date glossary of key terms A guide to useful web and online resources

This edited volume is an inquiry into the representation of intimate relationships in a diverse array of media including cinema, arts, literature, picture books, advertising and popular music. It examines artistic portrayal of intimate relationships as a subversion of the boundaries between the representable and the non-representable, the real and the surreal, the visceral and the ideal, the embodied and the abstracted, the configured and transfigured. The essays focus on artistic mediation of intimacy in diverse relationships, including heterosexual, same-sex, familial, sibling' , political, and sadomasochistic. The collection offers new interdisciplinary and multicultural perspectives on current trends in the study of popular representations of intimacy; representations that affect and formulate people's most personal inspirations, desires, angsts, dreams and nightmares in an increasingly alienated, industrialized world.
