Excerpt from The Making of a Canadian To-day) and can vouch for the absolute truthfulness of the stories; also, that the people, places, and incidents are faithfully described and that the conditions of life then existing in the different parts of Canada, as por trayed by me in the pages of this book, were absolutely true at the time. I have written The Making of a Canadian at the urgent request of many of my most respected and honored friends, consisting of ministers of the gospel, lawyers, doctors, business men, and a prominent author. I was traveling through Louisiana, Texas, and other Southern states some time ago, and this particular author was my traveling companion. He had traveled extensively in all parts of the world. As my wanderings had carried me over a good part of Europe, as well as the United States and Canada, naturally our conversation drifted into reminiscences of personal experiences in our travels, and of course we had a great many to relate. After an absence of several months we returned to New York, and as we were saying good-bye he said: My dear boy, if I had at my disposal one-half of the interesting reminiscences of travel which you have related to me, I would most certainly group them together and make a book which would not only be interesting and instructive to young people, but highly entertaining to all who read it. Write it by all means. Many others have said the same thing, if not in the same words yet in substance the meaning was the same. Therefore I have written this book of stories, entitled The Making of a Cana dian, which is a truthful recital of the life and adven tures of Jack Arling, the hero of the book. I will feel. Excerpt from Making Good: A Story of Northwest Canada Jack Young stood contemplating the sailing schooner Jersey as it lay in dock at Bristol. The name appealed to him, for Jersey had been his home for the sixteen years of his life. He had not run away from home; the old homestead had been sold a few weeks ago on the death of his father, and his mother had gone to make her home with an older brother, so Jack, with an inborn love of the sea, had decided to seek adventure and a living on its wide, rolling spaces. He walked over to the Jersey and found it agog with life - it was going out on the tide that night. Presently the huge figure of a man came down the gangway, and as he stepped on to the dock Jack walked over to him. "Excuse me, sir," he said, "but is there any chance of a job on your boat?" The man stopped, turned suddenly, and stood looking down at Jack for several seconds, then slowly removed his pipe from his mouth. Excerpt from What Is the Destiny of Canada? Eight men of every ten in the United States, who have thought upon the subject, have reached the con elusion that Canada ought to belong to that country. This decision has not been reached by an elaborate process of reasoning, nor by a mature consideration of the consequences of such an event. The general belief that the United States comprises nearly all that is worth having on the continent makes it easy for the average American to jump to the conclusion that what remains ought to be included within the Union. \vith out realizing the magnitude of the country to the north, or making any estimate of its possibilities, the general conclusion is that its addition to the United States would not disturb or imperil the existing system. A more careful study of the matter might lead to a different conclusion but, in view of the feeling which now prevails, the eventual acquisition of Canada as a National policy would be approved by an immense majority.
