Excerpt from The Making of an Oration This manual is the outgrowth of nearly twenty years' experience in teaching rhetoric, in its various forms and applications, to successive classes of college students. Much of it was given originally as informal and unwritten lectures to classes in oratorical composition. Later these lectures were committed to writing for the purpose of making them more useful to my pupils. It is hoped that the informal style and methods of the classroom will not detract from the usefulness of the book. The aim of the following pages is preeminently practical. Their purpose is to present as clearly and definitely as may be the distinctions between the oration and other forms of discourse, and to set forth concretely and specifically the fundamental methods that must be pursued by him who would attain success in oratorical composition. No attempt is made to teach the higher and finer forms of oratorical style. What is the use of trying to teach in a book what can not be taught or learned, in any large and satisfying measure, in the classroom or from a book? Excerpt from Hints on Writing and Speech-Making The first of these two chapters appeared long Since in the Atlantic Monthly (ix. And was afterwards included in the author's volume entitled Atlantic Essays. Teachers have several times urged that it should be separately printed as a little manual of literary composition; and I have indeed seen it used for that purpose in a college class-room. Now that Similar suggestions are beginning to be made as to the other brief essay, Hints on Speech making, it has seemed well to present the two together in a small volume. The last named paper appeared first in Harper's Magazine for November, 1886; and it is here reprinted with the consent of the publishers. Excerpt from Notes on Speech-Making The arguments of both classes of these prophets of evil are specious. To the former group it may be suggested that the perfecting of the Krupp gun has not made the Colt revolver obso lete. Because a man can reach a mil lion in a newspaper, there is no reason why he should not also reach a thou sand with a speech. The printed word is wide-spread, no doubt, but indirect. Excerpt from The Press and the Stage: An Oration The position I assume is that the newspaper press has practically displaced the public in the exercise of judgment and the formation of the stage; that in ac cepting this ofice it has incurred its responsibilities; that this service of opinions to the public has paralyzed the freedom and strength of public judgment that actors seek to occupy high places by force of press advertise ment that the journalist, as a rule, is incompetent as a specialist in dramatic afi'airs, and encourages a trivial kind of drama and bujfoonery that the few journalists conspicuous by their capacity are too few to make head against this influence, and protest vainly, while the tor rent of ribaldry and charlatanism sweeps into bathos, and imposture sits on the dramatic throne. And of this state of things no great drama, no great actor, can possi bly come, and none has come - not one. Burlesque and so ciety melodrama monopolize the stage. So since 1850 not a single work of any enduring life has been added to dra matic literature: the age is barren. These are a few of the results I attribute largely to the agency of the press.
