This book provides keys, descriptions and illustrations for about 850 species of liverworts and hornworts, in 148 genera and 47 families, of Colombia and Ecuador. The largest genera are Lejeunea (66 spp.), Plagiochila (65), Frullania (54), Radula (33), Metzgeria (33), Cololejeunea (32), Cheilolejeunea (30), Bazzania (26), Drepanolejeunea (25), Ceratolejeunea (18), Diplasiolejeunea (18), and Syzygiella (18). Species descriptions include brief morphological characterization and discussion with emphasis on characters for identification, world range as well as distribution and habitat in Colombia and Ecuador. Classes, orders, families and genera are also described and the main features for recognition of the genera are briefly discussed. The introduction includes chapters on history of exploration, diversity and endemism, and classification. A glossary, bibliography and index to scientific names are also provided.

Liverworts, (division Marchantiophyta), are any of more than 7,000 species of small non-vascular spore-producing plants. Liverworts are distributed worldwide, though they are most commonly found in the tropics area. In Thailand, liverworts have been collected and studied since 1899. The book “Liverwort genera of Thailand” by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Phiangphak Sukkharak, Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, Burapha University, provides a synopsis on the liverwort genera of Thailand, in which 520 species in 93 genera and 39 families have been reported, representing about 7% of the world’s liverwort species. The book consists of an introduction to liverworts, history of liverwort studies in Thailand, classification of liverworts in Thailand, key to genera of liverworts found in Thailand, generic descriptions, illustrations, discussion of the most important features for identification, data on the distribution and ecology, as well as the number of species worldwide and in Thailand.

This reference work provides a comprehensive overview of bioactive compounds investigated in bryophytes and pteridophytes and explores their nutritional, biological, pharmacological and ecological effects. Bryophytes are cosmopolitan lower plants that are rich in phytochemicals including fatty acids, tocopherols, phenolics, terpenoids. Additionally, these plants contain bibenzyls, bis-benzyls, and polyketides which have been demonstrated to have antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and cytotoxic activities. Pteridophytes are another group of lower vascular plants which were reported to have useful secondary compounds such as flavonoids, steroids, phenolics, terpenoids, and these plants impart medicinal values including antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor, and anti-HIV activities. This book contains comprehensive contributions compiled by expert scientists and researchers in this field. The book offers a useful resource for plant biotechnologists, plant biologists, pharmacologists, pharmacists, food technologists, nutritionists, research investigators of the healthcare industry, academia, faculty, and students of biology and biomedical sciences. It also provides a strategic framework for further research and development activities of bryophytes and pteridophytes of the world.

"An illustrated glossary of terms that are used to describe mosses, liverworts, and hornworts. Written in informal prose, it's intended to be an everyday reference for not only bryology and botany students, but also gardeners and anybody who's interested in plants. The second edition has half again as many pages (over 330) and illustrations (nearly 1400) as the first edition did, and two-thirds of those illustrations are new. Over 530 species of bryophytes are illustrated. Also, an appendix explains how to photograph bryophytes without a camera."--NHBS Environment Bookstore.

This book has been produced to highlight the conservation importance of the mosses, liverworts, and hornworts that are found on cultivated land. These plants may be tiny and unobtrusive, but close examination reveals their true beauty. The stunning photographs will surely inspire an increased level of interest in this relatively little-known group and enable even the novice bryologist to gain a better insight into the rich diversity of our bryophyte flora. An introduction to the mosses, liverworts, and hornworts associated with cultivated land Information on the 86 bryophytes found in arable fields Illustrated profiles of the 47 bryophytes most closely associated with arable farming, highlighting those included in the UK Biodiversity Action Plan Superb close-up photographs and illustrations showing the key features Distribution maps based on the latest available data An easy-to-use approach to the identification of this challenging group

This is the first book to cover England's rare and threatened mosses and liverworts, collectively known as bryophytes. As a group, they are the most ancient land plants and occupy a unique position in the colonization of the Earth by plant life. However, many are at risk from habitat loss, pollution, climate change, and other factors. Britain is one of the world's best bryologically recorded areas, yet its mosses and liverworts are not well known outside a small band of experts. This has meant that conservation action has tended to lag behind that of more charismatic groups such as birds and mammals. Of the 916 different types of bryophyte in England, 87 are on the British Red List and are regarded as threatened under the strict criteria of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. This book aims to raise awareness by providing stunning photographs--many never before published--of each threatened species, as well as up-to-date profiles of 84 of them, including status, distribution, history, and conservation measures. The book looks at what bryophytes are, why they are important and useful, and what makes them rare; it also examines threats, extinctions, ex situ conservation techniques, legislation, and the impact of the 1992 Convention on Biological Diversity. Provides the first treatment of England's rare and threatened mosses and liverworts Features stunning photographs--many never before published--of each species and many of their habitats Treats each species in a handy and attractive double-page layout Includes up-to-date profiles of 84 species, including status, distribution, history, and conservation measures Presents the first overview of English bryophyte conservation Offers invaluable guidance to people working in conservation in England, the British Isles, Europe, and beyond
