A delicious true crime account of a murder most gallic—think CSI Paris meets Georges Simenon—whose lurid combination of sex, brutality, forensics, and hypnotism riveted first a nation and then the world. In 1889, the gruesome murder of a lascivious court official at the hands of a ruthless con man and his pliant mistress launched the trial of the century. When Toussaint-Augustin Gouffé entered 3, rue Tronson du Coudray, expecting a delightful assignation with the comely Gabrielle Bompard, he was instead murdered by Gabrielle and her lover, Michel Eyraud. An international manhunt chased the infamous couple from Paris to America’s West Coast, culminating in a sensational trial that investigated the power of hypnosis to possess, control, and even kill. As the inquiry into the guilt or innocence of the woman the French tabloids dubbed the “Little Demon” intensified, the most respected minds in France vehemently debated: Was Gabrielle Bompard the pawn of her mesmerizing lover or simply a coldly calculating murderess capable of killing a man in cold blood?

The Little Demon is an engrossing tale of rage, desperate affection, and subtle opportunism in a small Russian provincial town shortly after the turn of the 20th century. It narrates the story of Peredonov, the antihero, a petty official who lives in constant hate for the world around him and life itself. Throughout the novel, Peredonov struggles to be promoted to governmental inspector of his province and starts going paranoid and hallucinating. The main hero, Peredonov, is as comical as he is disgusting. He is at once a victim, a monster, a foolish hypocrite, and a vicious nitwit. The plot moves from him to the hopeless romance of the boy Sasha Pylnikov and a much older woman Ludmila Rutilova. Fyodor Sologub's The Little Demon is one of the most humorous and the most scandalous of the great Russian classics, packed with nude boys, curvy girls, and a strange mixture of beauty and perversity. Even in its censored form, it is considered one of the most infuriating and sexually open of the Russian books classics.

Paranormal private eye, vigilante, anti-heroine, and demon girl. That's a four-in-one package. Shop around, you can't find anyone else offering that! It's been seven months since demons tried and failed to ravage New York City. The remains of their demonic faction are still around though, causing silly problems as a sign of protest and forging alliances with criminals. I deal with the small stuff the cops can't be bothered with, like the disappearance of a young woman from the Russian community of Little Odessa. Demons are involved. The Russian Mafia doesn't want me involved. People in the area don't like me. But guess what? I'm the only one with the magical talents needed to bring this woman back home. Ladies and gentlemen, this is Tuesday for me in a nutshell.

A dark classic of Russia's silver age, this blackly funny novel recounts a schoolteacher's descent into sadism, arson and murder. Mad, lascivious, sadistic and ridiculous, the provincial schoolteacher Peredonov torments his students and has hallucinatory fantasies about acts of savagery and degradation, yet to everyone else he is an upstanding member of society. As he pursues the idea of marrying to gain promotion, he descends into paranoia, sexual perversion, arson, torture and murder. Sologub's anti-hero is one of the great comic monsters of twentieth-century fiction, subsequently lending his name to the brand of sado-masochism known as Peredonovism. The Little Demon (1907) made an immediate star of its author who, refuting suggestions that the work was autobiographical, stated 'No, my dear contemporaries ... it is about you'. This grotesque mirror of a spiritually bankrupt society is arguably the finest Russian novel to have come out of the Symbolist movement. Fyodor Sologub was born in St Petersburg in 1863. His first two novels Bad Dreams (1896) and The Little Demon (1907) were drawn from his own experiences as schoolmaster in a remote provincial town. For many years Sologub could not find a publisher for The Little Demon but when in 1907 the novel was at last published - to immediate and resounding success - he was able to leave his restricting career and devote himself to literature. In 1921 his wife committed suicide and Sologub died a few years later in 1927. Ronald Wilks studied Russian language and literature at Trinity College,Cambridge, after training as a Naval interpreter, and later Russian literature at London University. He has translated many works from Russian for Penguin Classics, including books by Gorky, Gogol, Pushkin, Tolstoy and Chekhov.
