Excerpt from Home Life and Reminiscences of Alexander Campbell I have, for the sake of the rising generation who have not the opportunity of referring to the volumes of the Christian Baptist, (mr. C.'s first publication) nor to the volumes of the Millennial Harbinger, quoted from them that which will enlarge and edify their minds. One address upon Colleges, especially, I hope will be read with care and prove of benefit to the young. I have embodied in these pages a sermon or two of dear Mr. Campbell's, as there have never been but some three or four preserved; also Father Thomas Campbell's Farewell Discourse on the solemn and imperative command Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength, and thy neighbor as thyself. Excerpt from The Life of Colin Campbell, Lord Clyde, Vol. 1 of 2 Some of Lord Clyde's friends being under the impres sion that he had prohibited the publication of any of his papers, I desire to say a word in explanation. The impression is a mistaken one, although it cannot be denied that his consent was given with reluctance, as will be 'seen presently. Oxford, the home of lost causes, the epitome of the world of medieval and renaissance learning in Britain, has always fascinated at a variety of levels: social, institutional, cultural. Its rival, Cambridge, was long dominated by mathematics, while Oxford's leading study was Classics. In this pioneering book, 16 leading authorities explore a variety of aspects of Oxford Classics in the last two hundred years: curriculum, teaching and learning, scholarly style, publishing, gender and social exclusion and the impact of German scholarship. Greats (Literae Humaniores) is the most celebrated classical course in the world: here its early days in the mid-19th century and its reform in the late 20th are discussed, in the latter case by those intimately involved with the reforms. An opening chapter sets the scene by comparing Oxford with Cambridge Classics, and several old favourites are revisited, including such familiar Oxford products as Liddell and Scott's "Greek-English Lexicon", the "Oxford Classical Texts", and Zimmern's "Greek Commonwealth". The book as a whole offers a pioneering, wide-ranging survey of Classics in Oxford.

Excerpt from Misrepresentations in Campbell's Lives of Lyndhurst and Brougham In Lord Lyndhurst's life, he observes that Lyndhurst took the new Government of Lord Derby under his special guardianship, ready at all times to support it by praising its measures, and the men who composed it, including Sugden, the new Chancellor, hitherto an object of his special aversion. And again in 1852 he states, that Lyndhurst paid a very just tribute of applause to the Bill for abolishing Masters in Chancery, prepared according to the Report of a Whig Commission, and presented by Lord St. Leonards, the Protectionist Chancellor. Lyndhursts zeal carried him so far as to pronounce this functionary the model of every cancellarian good quality, accomplishment, and virtue, - declaring that no Government ever was more fortunate in a Chancellor, and that the present occupant of the Woolsack, besides being the greatest of lawyers, was distinguished by his placid temper and his mild and gentlemanly manners.
