Excerpt from Saint Vincent De Paul He may not have been without that hankering after the ages of simple faith which besets every sensitive soul at times; yet his instinctive sagacity told him that the sun will neither stand still nor go back upon its course for all our tender longings; that God fulfils Himself in many ways; that if we would in any degree shape the world better we must begin by shaping ourselves to it as we find it. His attitude towards that new world was not one of blind hostility, but of just and even sym pathetic discrimination, of willingness to use and foster and profit by every little beginning of good ness, every little glimmer of truth. Excerpt from Life of St. Vincent De Paul: Founder of the Congregation of the Mission, and of the Sisters of Charity France was, under Henry the third, in the most afflicting situation, when God who, even in his anger, is mindful of his mercies, gave to the world in a corner of the Barrens of Bordeaux a man, who, notwithstanding his humble condition, was one day to restore to the Church a portion of her ancient splendor, and to render signal service to the State. This child of benediction was born on the Tuesday after Easter, the twenty-fourth day of April 1576, in a small hamlet of the parish of Pouy, in the diocese of Acqs, towards the Pyrenees. His father was called William de Paul, and his mother, Bertrande de Moras. Their fortune was a medium between extreme necessity, and comfortable mediocrity. Piety, simplicity, and innocence of manners, were a substitute before God, for what they wanted in the eyes of men. Assiduous labor joined to a very frugal life, supplied the want of a more abundant patrimony, and afforded them the means of relieving those who were poorer than themselves. God blessed their marriage with six children, two girls and four boys. Vincent, whose life we are writing, was the third; and in a family where every thing was turned to profit, he, like his brothers, was employed in the labors of the field. Excerpt from Vincent De Paul: Priest and Philanthropist, 1576-1660 See Recherches sur la Famille de S. Vincent de Paul. Oscar Poli, 1879. Saragossa. In all probability, the horrors enacted in Paris and Touraine reached him only as a distant rumour, and stirred him neither in experience nor in imagination; in after-years he makes no reference to them. During the twelve years of reconstruction, extending from 1598 to 1610, the course of his destiny had no connection with the history of his country. He was the bearer of some message from Rome to Henri IV. In 1608, 'but we have no knowledge of the nature of this business, nor had it any notable effect on the fortunes of the messenger. Then and for yet another decade the life of Vincent de Paul was hidden; other men had time to rise to eminence, to win a place in history, and pass out of the world, while he was still serving his apprenticeship. The confusion that prevailed during the minority and youth of Louis XIII. Touched him as little as did the miseries of the Valois rule; he had lived nearly half a century before he had part in the national life, and yet before his\death he had rendered more effectual service to his countrymen than any Frenchman of that epoch.
