Excerpt from The Life of St. Ignatius Loyola, Vol. 2: Founder of the Jesuits The readers Of St. Ignatius's Life will look with pleasure on the following testimony which our holy Father Pope Pius IX. Has recently borne to the la bours and merits Of the Company of Jesus. It is the more interesting as the Society is new again suffering from the persecutions and calumnies which its Blessed Founder impetrated upon his children, before he died, as the most precious of His gifts whose Name they bear. The extract is taken from a late number of the Tablet. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Life of St. Ignatius Loyola The grey morning was breaking mistily over the little town of Pamplona in Navarre. To many of those within the citadel it seemed as if the greyness of the morning had found its way into their very hearts, so unpromising was the outlook that lay before them. The little garrison had been weakened by the retreat of many of the Spanish officers their fortifications were incomplete; ammunition was scarce; and encamped at their very gates lay the French army. The attack might begin at any moment, and unless the expected reinforcements arrived, nothing could save the citadel.' The life of a saint in their own words. This is a translated transcript of Saint Ignatius' own description of his life and spiritual battles. Ignatius was raised by the wife of a blacksmith, eventually becoming a knight. After being injured in battle he was inspired by stories of saints to dedicate himself to his religion and eventually became an influential religious figure. He is famous for his Spiritual Exercises, which aim to bring the practitioner closer to the divine through four "weeks" of work, but perhaps more so for founding the Jesuit order. These are not the topics of the autobiography however, as ever humble Ignatius is more concerned with examining his own spiritual (rather than material) battles and conversion. Excerpt from History of the Life and Institute of St. Ignatius De Loyola, Vol. 2: Founder of the Society of Jesus Fourth. The fourth Rule is that Of silence, when our own necessities or those Of others do not require it to be broken; but even then, neither proud and haughty language, nor that curiosity which listens to worldly news, nor the idle ness which takes pleasure in vain and jesting remarks, must in any way mingle in the conversation. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.
