Excerpt from The Life of Robert Louis Stevenson, Vol. 1 of 2 His book is intended to supplement the vol umes of Stevenson's Letters already published. Originally it was to have been written by Mr. Colvin, and to have appeared simultaneously with the two volumes of correspondence, so admirably edited by him; but when health and opportunity unfortunately failed him, Mrs. Stevenson requested me to undertake the task. The reason for this selection was that, during the last two years and a half of my cousin's life, I had on his invitation made Vailima my home and the point of departure for my journeys, and, apart from the members of his own family, had been throughout that period the only one of his intimate friends in contact with every side of his life. Excerpt from The Life of Robert Louis Stevenson The duty of writing this book was finally entrusted to me because during the last two and a half years before my cousin's death I had on his invitation made vama my home and the point of departure for my journeys, and, apart from the members of his own fam ily, I had been throughout that period the only one of his intimate friends in touch with every side of his life. In order to present the book in a single volume it has been necessary to reduce it in bulk, but this oppor tunity has been used solely for the purpose of lighten ing it and rendering it generally more readable. Part of the matter omitted, such as the Vailima Prayers, has now been published elsewhere: the chief part of the re mainder related either to Samoan politics or contained details concerning some of Stevenson's minor works, which were of interest only to the special student who can still find what he needs in the unabridged edition. Some quotations haye been abridge'dand a few trivial paragraphs omittéd'w The framework has been slightly cut down: the general dfieéé of; The picture has, so far as I could manage, remained: tm'aitered. Excerpt from The Life of Robert Louis Stevenson, Vol. 2 of 2: With Portraits The book, however, although it was in Stevenson's mind for several years and was advertised as in prepa ration, was never written, or, so far as I know, even begun. Not the least interesting part of the whole story is the picture of Stevenson sitting down to ad dress a letter of inquiries to Mr. Gladstone, for whose political career he had always the most complete aversion, and finding himself, somewhat to his dis may, overcome with an involuntary reverence for the statesman who embodied so much of England's past. Casting about for a new story, he turned in February to the highroad, that to him and to his father before him had for long been one of the richest fields of ro mance. When, to his delight, he had first found his powers of narrative in Treasure Island, and discovered what possibilities lay before him of writing for boys the kind of stories he liked himself, he announced with glee to Mr. Henley that his next book was to be Jerry Abershaw: A Tale of Putney Heath. 1 He was also to write The Squaw Men: or, The Wild West, and of this one chapter was actually drafted. The new ven ture was, however, called The Great North Road, but, like St. Ives in later days, it rapidly increased in proportions and in difficulty of management. So at the end of the eighth chapter it was relinquished for Kid napped and apparently dropped out of sight. Already in its beginnings it showed an increase of skill in dealing with Nance Holdaway, who foreshadowed other heroines yet to come. Excerpt from Robert Louis Stevenson The history of English literature on its biographical side serves to show how few of our great writers have come of a literary stock. In one instance after another the same story is repeated; a strong and virile race, following some active occupation, produces at a certain stage a man or woman who provides it with means of expression; and, though this is probably mere coincidence, the branch of the family thus distinguished has a way of soon afterward dwindling and dying out. Chaucer came of a family of vintners, Shakespeare of a family of yeomen. Sir Walter Scott had behind him a long line of Border 'cattle-lifters.' Thackeray's immediate ancestors were India merchants, George Eliot's were carpenters and builders, and Robert Louis Stevenson's father, grandfather, and great-grandfather were engineers. Instances might be multiplied, but these may suffice; and the conclusion seems to be that in the race as well as in the individual, literature, if it is to be strong and living, must be in the closest touch with life. In Robert Louis Stevenson the conception of a man as the product of forces that had gathered through the long line of his ancestors was peculiarly vivid. Excerpt from The Works of Robert Louis Stevenson, Vol. 1: Tales and Fantasies One evening in March they were driven by a sharp fall of sleet into an Oyster Bar in the imme diate neighbourhood of Leicester Square. Colonel Geraldine was dressed and painted to represent a person connected with the Press in reduced circum stances; while the Prince had, as usual, travestied his appearance by the addition of false whiskers and a pair of large adhesive eyebrows. These lent him a shaggy and weather-beaten air, which, for one Of his urbanity, formed the most impenetrable disguise. Thus equipped, the commander and his satellite sipped their brandy and soda in security. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
