Excerpt from The Life of FroudeThis irreparable calamity was made by cir cumstances doubly calamitous. Though des tined to survive all his brothers and sisters, Anthony was a weak, sickly child, not considered likely to grow up. From his father's lips he never heard the mention of his mother's name, nor was the Archdeacon himself capable of showing any tenderness whatever. In place of a mother the little boy had an aunt, who applied to him principles of Spartan severity. At the mature age of three he was ducked every morning at a trough, to harden him, in the ice-cold water from a spring, and whenever he was naughty he was whipped. It may have been from this unpleasant discipline that he derived the contempt for self-indulgence, and the indifference to pain, which distinguished him in after life. On the other hand, he was allowed to read what he liked, and devoured Grimm's Tales, The Seven Cham pions of Christendom, and The Arabian N ights., He was an imaginative and reflective child, full of the wonder in which philosophy begins.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Mr. Froude and Carlyle As a rule the names of those who supplied new material are not now given; but as names must often be given, at least in notes, in the final work, those who supply information and desire their names to be with held should inform the author of their wishes. Names which he is expressly requested or which he can guess he is expected to withhold, shall of course never be mentioned. The author hopes that publicity will be given to his appeal for information by the courtesy of many editors. Many footnotes have been omitted, to lighten the book. Perhaps what remain are enough. The correction of proofs and the preparation of an index have perforce to be left to others, when half the convex world intrudes between the writer and his printers. In this biography, we are introduced to the life of James Anthony Froude, the renowned English historian, novelist, biographer, and editor of Fraser's Magazine. Raised amidst the Anglo-Catholic Oxford Movement, Froude had initially intended to become a clergyman. However, doubts about the doctrines of the Anglican church, which he expressed in his controversial novel 'The Nemesis of Faith,' caused him to abandon his religious career. Froude went on to become one of the most celebrated historians of his time, known for his work 'History of England from the Fall of Wolsey to the Defeat of the Spanish Armada.' This book provides a fascinating insight into the life of a complex and talented individual who made a significant contribution to English literature and history.

Excerpt from Hurrell Froude: Memoranda and Comments HE epistolary matter in the first section of this volume is drawn from material already in print: chiefly from Part I. Of The Remains of Me Reverend Rienara' Harrell Frona'e, ma., Fellow of Oriel, published by the Rivingtons in 1838, and, incidentally, from jonn Henry Newman: Letters and Correspondence to 1845, published by the Longmans in 1890: from one notable work, that is to say, which is wholly forgotten, and from another yet recent, of great and unique interest, which has not yet won its full public appreciation. For the unrestricted use of the desired extracts from these books, the Editor's grateful thanks are due equally to the representatives of the elder branch of the Froude family, and to Cardinal Newman's literary executor.
