Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: September 27, 1923 The whole career of the Prophet teaches us that whenever he desired wisdom and understanding concerning the work where unto he had been called, he sought the Lord through prayer; furthermore, that the work of the Lord and the laying of its foundations were not the acts of a moment, but of growth directed of the Lord, and that the Prophet was to grow with it. As witness to this, we have first the heavenly vision, followed by a number of years of experience; then the visit of the angel Moroni, with certain promises concerning the revealing of the Priesthood and the coming of Elijah to confer the keys that would be for the salvation of the living and the dead and furthermore, the revealing of the hidden plates of the Book of Mormon; then four years of education before these plates were delivered; then nearly three years before they were translated. Finally the Priesthood was restored, the Church organized, and the keys of the gathering were committed, and other fundamentals attended to pertaining to the establishment of the marvelous work and a wonder which was about to come forth. Some of us are prone to think that the work of the Lord should progress more rapidly, that purposes should happen as they are revealed but we should remember the lesson in the life of Joseph, that before the will of God can be done among men, there must be a preparation of those through whom it is to be done. Are we willing to make the sacrifice that shall give us that preparation The Lord is willing and anxious that His work shall grow, he requires that we shall seek Him in prayer and prepare ourselves to accomplish what He has given us to do. And the Prophet has set us a wonderful example in this respect. He asked the Lord what to do. The Lord told him, then he faithfully set about to perform his tasks. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: April 26, 1923 In this connection may be mentioned an interesting report which has only just appeared in the Continental Daily Mail ot' the 27th March last, on the subject of motor fuel being manufactured from rubbish, tons of waste material being annually dealt with to produce about half a million gallons of alcohol, suitable for motor spirit and acetic acid. The raw material in this case is said to be the waste hops which brewers have to pay to have carted away. The newspaper article closes by stating that apart from the motor spirit yielded, some cubic feet of gas suitable for internal combustion engines is included in the treatment of a ton of waste material. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: August 30, 1923 Many people have asked how it is that Mormonism so func tions; how it is able to work in such a fashion ia behalf of humanity; because I might take anything else, any other activity, sound and good and designed for the welfare of the human race, and show practically the same conditions that apply to the course and the cause of ed u *ation. One man will declare that the reason why these things are so in Mormonism is merely because by some accidental condition, great men have arisen in Mormon dom. Joseph Smith was a tremendously great character; every student, whether of our people or not, will admit the greatness of the man. And so, those who do not understand us will say we had a great man to found our Church and that explains how we are able to show a condition so favorable. Another will say that Brigham Young was such a great man. And so, as I read recently in a book not long since published, all Mormonism may be explained because of the great men that Mormonism has had. Another book declares that the reason why this test of truth, this test of fitness to human conditions, measures up as well as it does, is because Mormonism has been placed under very difficult conditions. It had to light its way in Missouri. It had to fight its way out here in the desert. It has been opposed by men, and as a consequence it has been able, through Opposition, to develop into the great institution that it is to-day. Any such explanation, my brethren and sisters, is insufficient to those of us who have understood the spirit of the remarks that have been made at this conference. There are in this Church great fundamental principles, and reflected from those princi ples are great fundamental practices. The possession of these principles, the use of these practices, lie at the foundation of any explanation of the vitality and the strength and the fitness of Mormonism to serve the human race and that is my testimony to you, as I understand this great Gospel of Jesus Christ. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: January 18, 1923 The contention of the members of this Church is that the Gospel in its fulness and power has been restored to the earth and the fundamental principles of Christianity, many of which have been forgotten or rejected by the world, have again been restored for men's salvation. Mormonism seeks to round out and perfect a fragmentary Christianity. It seeks to bring into accord and union all Christian peoples and to prepare the world for the second advent of Jesus Christ. There have been some who have been unwilling to con cede to the members of this Church the appellation of Christians. Through them God will work out his mighty plans, many of which are not yet disclosed; and the kingdom of God will roll on and the truth will be triumph ant and darkness will be banished and the reign of evil will cease. Satan will be bound and his hosts with him, and the wicked will not continue to flourish. The righteous will prevail and the king dom and government of God which he has set up will cover the earth until the very earth itself having filled the law of its being, will be resurrected and clothed upon with the glory of God, and Christ will be its king. God bless you, brethren and sisters. May His peace abide with you and be in your homes, surround your homes with everything that is good, bright, lovely and comfortable. Teach your child ren in kindness to come up in the way that God Almighty has established and that is going to prevail. It is going to be the kingdom. The kingdoms of this world will become the kingdom of our God and His Christ, and He will reign forever and ever. May all be found worthy to reign with Him in glory, through Jesus Christ. Amen.
