Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: January 18, 1923 The contention of the members of this Church is that the Gospel in its fulness and power has been restored to the earth and the fundamental principles of Christianity, many of which have been forgotten or rejected by the world, have again been restored for men's salvation. Mormonism seeks to round out and perfect a fragmentary Christianity. It seeks to bring into accord and union all Christian peoples and to prepare the world for the second advent of Jesus Christ. There have been some who have been unwilling to con cede to the members of this Church the appellation of Christians. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: January 25, 1923 A great English writer has attempted to demonstrate the thesis that religious and moral reforms are the aftermath of intellectual progress. In other words, he attributes the reform in the social and political world to intellectual development, but not to the religious or ethical influences pervading the world. I believe history does not accept this View. The ethical and religious movements have purged society, developed reforms and advanced the cause of civilization. A religion deeply spiritual will produce a better social organism and increase the intellectual activity of the people. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: August 30, 1923 Many people have asked how it is that Mormonism so func tions; how it is able to work in such a fashion ia behalf of humanity; because I might take anything else, any other activity, sound and good and designed for the welfare of the human race, and show practically the same conditions that apply to the course and the cause of ed u *ation. One man will declare that the reason why these things are so in Mormonism is merely because by some accidental condition, great men have arisen in Mormon dom. Joseph Smith was a tremendously great character; every student, whether of our people or not, will admit the greatness of the man. And so, those who do not understand us will say we had a great man to found our Church and that explains how we are able to show a condition so favorable. Another will say that Brigham Young was such a great man. And so, as I read recently in a book not long since published, all Mormonism may be explained because of the great men that Mormonism has had. Another book declares that the reason why this test of truth, this test of fitness to human conditions, measures up as well as it does, is because Mormonism has been placed under very difficult conditions. It had to light its way in Missouri. It had to fight its way out here in the desert. It has been opposed by men, and as a consequence it has been able, through Opposition, to develop into the great institution that it is to-day. Any such explanation, my brethren and sisters, is insufficient to those of us who have understood the spirit of the remarks that have been made at this conference. There are in this Church great fundamental principles, and reflected from those princi ples are great fundamental practices. The possession of these principles, the use of these practices, lie at the foundation of any explanation of the vitality and the strength and the fitness of Mormonism to serve the human race and that is my testimony to you, as I understand this great Gospel of Jesus Christ. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: May 24, 1923 So it is in this day, said President Clawson. The Lord has revealed himself to his people; both God the Eternal Father and His Son Jesus Christ appeared to Joseph Smith the prophet. The speaker referred to various revealed principles of the gospel, mentioning especially the revelation concerning the eternity of the marriage covenant, and attested that revelation is essential to the Church and Kingdom of God. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: April 26, 1923 In this connection may be mentioned an interesting report which has only just appeared in the Continental Daily Mail ot' the 27th March last, on the subject of motor fuel being manufactured from rubbish, tons of waste material being annually dealt with to produce about half a million gallons of alcohol, suitable for motor spirit and acetic acid. The raw material in this case is said to be the waste hops which brewers have to pay to have carted away. The newspaper article closes by stating that apart from the motor spirit yielded, some cubic feet of gas suitable for internal combustion engines is included in the treatment of a ton of waste material. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: August 9, 1923 I gather, too, that many men might support their families in more of luxury and com fort if they would but use reasonable care of the things which they have and the things which they acquire. AS I understand it, therefore, it is not only in self-denial and in forbearance to purchase the things which we desire, that thrift and economy consist, but in the proper preser' 'ation and use of the things with which we are blessed and I would urge upon my fellow members of the Church a more careful and thoughtful attention to all these various items that go into our economic life and that feature so largely in our successes or in our failures. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 85: May 10, 1923 Disaster has come to many members of the Church, he said. Because they failed to heed the counsel to stay out of debt. Some have lost their homes by reason of debt, and have been obliged to move to other climes; and this in some instances has resulted and might yet result in their drifting away from the Church. He said he can find no financial adviser who is willing to predict safety beyond the very near future, and to-day is as good a time as ever to heed the ad vice. It occurs to him that one debt the Latter-day Saints owe is their debt to the Lord, and he admonished the saints to be prompt and fair in the payment of their tithes in the season thereof. The next Speaker called was President Charles A. Callis of the Southern States mission. It is good to live to-day, he said. There have always been those who garnish the sepulchres of the dead prophets, the speaker pointed out, but he believes that if a man is disloyal to the Church leaders to-day he would have been disloyal to the Prophet Joseph Smith if a man is disloyal to the government of the United States to-day he would have been disloyal to George Washington and the other patriots of his day. He told of a conversation he had had with a learned man who said that if the world had been told ten years ago that the great world war was coming it would have laughed the informer to scorn and then would have crucified him. Elder Callis said he told the man that in effect the world did crucify such a man, for the Prophet Joseph Smith foretold the great Civil war and died a martyr to his convictions. It is the call of Latter-day Saints to cry repentance to the world and to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ, of whom Latter-day Saints are not ashamed.
