Some of his sermons are also recorded. He died very young in exile in 1931 from tuberculosis. All short life of Fr. hieromonk Nikon is imbued with a deep faith in God and unshakable devotion to His will under all difficult circumstances: in a monastery, in imprisonment, and in exile - and is so instructive that we considered it necessary to collect the available information about him (far from complete) that make up this biography.

Now in its second printing, this modest work is an anthology of spiritual advice given by various of the nineteenth-century teachers of Optina Monastery in central Russia, organized thematically under headings such as spiritual warfare, the love of neighbor, faith, the will of God, the education of children, the commandments of God, the path of salvation, etc. Each piece of advice varies in length from a single sentence to a full paragraph. Pithy, immediately accessible, and universally applicable, these counsels resemble the sayings of the ancient Desert Fathers. Appropriate both for prolonged study and for daily devotional reading.

In Keeping the Faith, Jennifer Jean Wynot presents a clear and concise history of the trials and evolution of Russian Orthodox monasteries and convents and the important roles they have played in Russian culture, in both in the spiritual and political realms, from the abortive reforms of 1905 to the Stalinist purges of the 1930s. She shows how, throughout the Soviet period, Orthodox monks and nuns continued to provide spiritual strength to the people, in spite of severe persecution, and despite the ambivalent relationship the Russian state has had to the Russian church since the reign of Ivan the Terrible. Focusing her study on two provinces, Smolensk and Moscow, Wynot describes the Soviet oppression and the clandestine struggles of the monks and nuns to uphold the traditions of monasticism and Orthodoxy. Their success against heavy odds enabled them to provide a counterculture to the Soviet regime. Indeed, of all the pre-1917 institutions, the Orthodox Church proved the most resilient. Why and how it managed to persevere despite the enormous hostility against it is a topic that continues to fascinate both the general public and historians. Based on previously unavailable Russian archival sources as well as written memoirs and interviews with surviving monks and nuns, Wynot analyzes the monasteries’ adaptation to the Bolshevik regime and she challenges standard Western assumptions that Communism effectively killed the Orthodox Church in Russia. She shows that in fact, the role of monks and nuns in Orthodox monasteries and convents is crucial, and they are largely responsible for the continuation of Orthodoxy in Russia following the Bolshevik revolution. Keeping the Faith offers a wealth of new information and a new perspective that will be of interest not only to students of Russian history and communism, but also to scholars interested in church-state relations.

Unite yourself first, at least in desire, with the one Truth, which is both Life and the Way! Unreliable for the Kingdom of God is a double-minded one. Why is he selling his birthright for a lentil stew! Write to him to give up all this, then maybe he will get better in body. Let him reject every thought with anger and the call of his Savior. This is the whole inner life! It is necessary to reduce the entire inner life into 8 words [the Jesus Prayer], through them to cleanse the form, the image, and otherwise - the thoughts and the heart, and otherwise - the temple of the living God, so that a similarity can enter a clean vessel ... Sapienti sat [with understanding enough ]. Let S. not be offended. If he fights, he will immediately add hemoglobin. Do not laugh. I assure you that it will be so. Since he accepted the first diagnosis, let him accept the second, and then it will be seen. We are about to die soon. What deeds can be discussed now for us, sick, weak and crippled? We are left with patience and sighing: God, be merciful to us, sinners! Hope firmly that if you die in this mood, you will enter the Kingdom of God, and avoid the enemies of salvation.

Orthodoxy has achieved a large scale revival in Russia following the collapse of Communism. However, paradoxically, although there is a high level of identification with Orthodoxy, there is in fact a low level of church attendance. This book, based on in depth ethnographic fieldwork, explores the social background and moral attitudes of the "little flock" of believers who actively participate in religious life. It reveals that the complex moral beliefs of the faithful have a disproportionately high impact on Russian society overall; that among the faithful there is a strong emphasis on striving for personal perfection; but that also there are strong collective ideas concerning religious nationalism and the synergy between the secular and the religious.

'The most magnificent novel ever written' Sigmund Freud The murder of brutal landowner Fyodor Karamazov changes the lives of his sons irrevocably: Mitya, the sensualist, whose bitter rivalry with his father immediately places him under suspicion for parricide; Ivan, the intellectual, driven to breakdown; the spiritual Alyosha, who tries to heal the family's rifts; and the shadowy figure of their bastard half-brother, Smerdyakov. Dostoyevsky's dark masterwork evokes a world where the lines between innocence and corruption, good and evil, blur, and everyone's faith in humanity is tested.
