Childhood friendship turns to love in this dark reimagining of the fountain of youth. In 1919, Charlie returns from WWI and gives his heart to Julia. As their love story begins, tragedy strikes when Julia contracts a deadly illness. On her deathbed, dreams of a future together shatter, but Charlie refuses to give up, convincing Julia to drink from a vial of "healing waters" his war buddy swore would bring spontaneous healing. Julia's miraculous recovery brings hope, but the water's murderous side effects snuff out the couple's short-lived joy. Can Charlie help Julia fight the water's call to kill? All their efforts may be in vain when Julia has to choose between running from the curse or embracing it in order to save Charlie. Journey with Julia and Charlie through a love story that spans a hundred years and an age-old curse that spans more and worse, puts Charlie's life and Julia's soul at risk.

Finally, after a century apart, Julia and Charlie begin building a life together. But once again, their plans for a future are thwarted when Charlie displays puzzling side effects of his supernatural existence as the Phoenix. As his symptoms progress and Julia runs out of options, they are forced to seek out the only other immortal they know—Charlie’s former captor, Amara. Darius and Amara go back millennia. Having drunk from the murderous Fountain of Youth, their history is marred by deadly choices. Amara is desperate to have Darius back but he cannot forgive her for the part she played in unleashing the Fountain of Youth on the world or for what the water made her do. When Julia gets wind of Amara’s insidious plan to redeem herself, she finds that an enemy of an enemy is a friend. After saving her life, Darius reveals the truth about Charlie’s existence as the Phoenix, including the fact that this time, Julia can’t save the only man she’s ever loved. Armed with nothing but a shadowy foretelling about the Phoenix, Julia discovers that with Charlie and his newfound abilities they may be able to stop Amara from unleashing her treachery on the world. The only problem is they have no idea how. Even if they could figure it out, will the cost of bringing Amara down be too high?

The hard-bitten PI with a bottle of bourbon in his desk drawer--it's an image as old as the genre of hard-boiled detective fiction itself. Alcohol has long been an important element of detective fiction, but it is no mere prop. Rather, the treatment of alcohol within the works informs and illustrates the detective's moral code, and casts light upon the society's attitudes towards drink. This examination of the role of alcohol in hard-boiled detective fiction begins with the genre's birth, in an era strongly influenced and affected by prohibition, and follows both the genre's development and its relation to our changing understanding of and attitudes towards alcohol and alcoholism. It discusses the works of Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler, Mickey Spillane, Robert B. Parker, Lawrence Block, Marcia Muller, Karen Kijewski and Sue Grafton. There are bibliographies of both the primary and critical texts, and an index of authors and works.

Integrative Theology is designed to help graduate students in a pluralistic world utilize a standard method of fruitful research. Each chapter on a major doctrine: (1) states a classic issue of ultimate concern, (2) surveys alternative past and present answers and (3) tests those proposals by their congruence with information on the subject progressively revealed from Genesis to Revelation. Then the chapter (4) formulates a doctrinal conclusion that consistently fits the many lines of biblical data, (5) defends that conviction respectfully, and finally (6) explores the conclusion’s relevance to a person’s spiritual birth, growth and service to others, all for the glory of God. Why the title Integrative Theology? In each chapter, steps 2-6 integrate the disciplines of historical, biblical, systematic, apologetic and practical theology.
