"Sex is very close to soul. Whoso touches sex touches the secrets and centers of life. This is the Mid-Spot, the Origin, the Crux, the Mystery. In sex the soul is naked. At the contacts of sex the soul trembles, quivers, is shaken to its midmost. The voice of sex, in its power, is as the voice of God - the most imperious and certain-to-be-obeyed call known in Nature or to man. Sex, soul, religion, morality, are not to be separated. They belong together. The first reverence we detect in Nature is that of the male for the female, of offspring for mother. There is fear elsewhere, but here are mysterious adumbrations and blendings of attraction, adoration, worshipful obedience and withdrawing respect. Sex-religion was the first religion of man and we shall never get back again to true religion until we again see God in His creative motions and worship and reverence the soul in flesh." The Karezza Method, published in 1931, is a beautiful, inspiring manual about the practice of Karezza (controlled intercourse) by J. William Lloyd. Thoughtfully written and based on actual experience, it brims with practical information. The author of The Karezza Method was apparently the same J. William Lloyd who was known as the "drugless physician." He was a poet, anarchist, writer, doctor, and editor of the Free Comrade. Lloyd (b. 1857) authored various unpublished writings, including Woman and the Larger Love (1933); A Brief Definition of the Larger Love (1929); and New Ideals in Love (1926), a lecture delivered before the Workers' Forum of Los Angeles, California. He died in 1940. Table of Contents PREFACE SOUL-BLENDING WHAT IS KAREZZA? This guide to Karezza - a form of slow and gentle sexual intercourse where the objective is not orgasm - is accurate, clear and enlightening. John William Lloyd explores herein the spiritual, conjugal, mental and gender-specific facets of Karezza. The author frequently and diversely contrasts the phenomena of karezza to that of ordinary lovemaking, whereby the pleasure of orgasm is among the commonest objectives. Karezza seeks to promote genuine affection and heartfelt passion between the lovers, that their emotional and psychological connection deepens. The raw pleasure of conventional intercourse is compared unfavorably to other fleeting, shallow joys in life; fine dining, alcohol, drugs. Karezza by contrast is presented as building long-lasting emotional depth, on achieving meaning and lasting contentedness in a relationship and life in general. Since its popularization by gynecologist Alice Bunker Stockham during the 1890s, karezza has been suggested by therapists and counsellors. As well as improving emotional connection and intimacy, Stockham considered karezza as a means of equalizing the sexes in their marriage, promoting fidelity and harmony in unions that might otherwise be in jeopardy. Equivalent practices to karezza have also existed in belief systems of Hinduism and Taoism for millennia.
