The books in this series contain short texts from the original stories from Viking Age. These new translations unlock the treasures of the Classical texts and will make a valued gift for friends, relatives or business associates. A little guide to understanding the ancient rune letters. Where-ever the Vikings went, they took the language of the runes with them. Runes have been found from the Black Sea and Russia in the East, all over Europe and Scandinavia and in Greenland. There are runes on memorial stones, weapons and tools. They were used to send messages, mark possessions, make calendars and other writings. Each letter is explained with the help of a runic verse dating from the Viking Age.

Would you tell the truth if it meant a death sentence? What if you had to decide today? Sixteen-year-old Anne Quinn longs for adventure, but is an apprentice Illuminatrix to the King of Deneresh for whom she keeps official records. Introduction to the use of runes as a practical script for a variety of purposes in Anglo-Saxon England. Runes are quite frequently mentioned in modern writings, usually imprecisely as a source of mystic knowledge, power or insight. This book sets the record straight. It shows runes working as a practical script for a variety of purposes in early English times, among both indigenous Anglo-Saxons and incoming Vikings. In a scholarly yet readable way it examines the introduction of the runic alphabet (the futhorc) to England in the fifth and sixth centuries, the forms and values of its letters, and the ways in which it developed, up until its decline at the end of the Anglo-Saxon period. It discusses how runes were used for informal and day-to-day purposes, on formal monuments, as decorative letters in prestigious manuscripts, for owners' or makers' names on everyday objects, perhaps even in private letters. For the first time, the book presents, together with earlier finds, the many runic objects discovered over the last twenty years, with a range of inscriptions on bone, metal and stone, even including tourists' scratched signatures found on the pilgrimage routes through Italy. It gives an idea of the immense range of informationon language and social history contained in these unique documents. The late R.I. PAGE was former Professor of Anglo-Saxon in the University of Cambridge.

Runework authority and author Edred Thorsson, explores the riddle of the runes. Combing historical lore with a detailed investigation, Runelore focuses on the esoteric aspects of the runic tradition. In Part One, Historical Lore, Thorsson uses archaeological evidence to explain where the runes come from, what they mean, and how they evolved. In Part Two, Hidden Lore, he takes a more psychological view of the runes and looks at the entire cosmology of the Old Norse to explain the role runes played and how they were used over time. Included are specific sections on rune magic and divination, rune poems, runic numerology, and concise explanations of the mysteries of the 24 runes. Reprinted with a newly designed cover, Runelore offers a complete picture of the Runes.

Seven oâe(tm)clock on a Monday morning, five hundred years after the End of the World, and goblins had been at the cellar again. Maddy Smith has always been an outsider. In a world ruled by the harsh and puritanical Order, she is shunned for the strange birthmark on her left hand. For this is no ordinary birthmark âe" it is a runemark, a sign of the old gods. In fact, Maddy can do things that no-one else can, things that could be called magic. But not until she meets the old traveller One-Eye, an outsider like herself, does she learn what power she really has, and what she will be asked to do with it. In Runemarks, Joanne Harris creates a world not unlike our own - if it had been shaped by the Vikings instead of the Romans - and colours it with her familiar blend of rich imagery and gritty realism. A disenchanted world, where the gods died long ago. Can Maddy bring them back to life?
