""Always more production" tells the fascinating history of the mining of iron ore at Cornwall, Pennsylvania. Mining began here in 1737 and continued for the next 236 years when the last mine closed. The Cornwall mines were some of the longest continuously operated mines in the United States and the largest iron mines until their production was eclipsed by larger mines in Michigan and Minnesota. Early mining was performed by a few handfuls of miners working for individual families like the Grubbs and Colemans. By the Twentieth Century, hundreds of miners and millers produced ore in Cornwall for the Bethlehem Steel Corporation. Over time, iron masters, companies, and corporations implored the miners to mine ever larger quantities of iron ore, hence the title "Always more production." By the time mining ended in 1973, miners had produced about 106 million tons of iron ore, along with large quantities of copper, silver, gold, and cobalt. Join the journey through the history, technology, and people that harvested these riches."--Page 4 of cover.
