How are events turned into news pictures that define them for the audience? How do events become commodified into pictures that both capture them and reiterate the values of the agencies that sell them? This book looks at every stage of the production of news photographs as they move to and from the ground and are sold around the world. Based on extensive fieldwork at a leading international news agency that includes participant observation with photographers in the field, at the agency’s local and global picture desks in Israel, Singapore, and the UK, in-depth interviews with pictures professionals, and observations and in-depth interviews at The Guardian’s picture desk in London, the findings in this book point to a wide cultural production infrastructure hidden from – and yet also nurtured and thus very much determined by – the consumer’s eye.

How does a photograph become a news image? An ethnography of the labor behind international news images, Image Brokers ruptures the self-evidence of the journalistic photograph by revealing the many factors determining how news audiences are shown people, events, and the world. News images, Zeynep Gürsel argues, function as formative fictions – fictional insofar as these images are constructed and culturally mediated, and formative because their public presence and circulation have real consequences in the world. Set against the backdrop of the War on Terror and based on fieldwork conducted at photojournalism’s centers of power, Image Brokers offers an intimate look at an industry in crisis. At the turn of the 21st century, image brokers—the people who manage the distribution and restriction of news images—found the core technologies of their craft, the status of images, and their own professional standing all changing rapidly with the digitalization of the infrastructures of representation. From corporate sales meetings to wire service desks, newsrooms to photography workshops and festivals, Image Brokers investigates how news images are produced and how worldviews are reproduced in the process.

Bachelor Thesis from the year 2013 in the subject Art - Photography and Film, grade: 1,3, ( Middlesex University in London ) (Art & Design), language: English, abstract: Journalism and the whole media industry as we know them today are changing dramatically. Through the rapid development of smart phones and the improvement of cameras we are noticing a dramatic change in the way journalism is used and how photojournalism is affected. The usage of “citizen journalism” has increased hundredfold and it is still rising. In this dissertation I want to take a closer look on this new phenomenon to discover if it is becoming a problem for professional photojournalists and if it affects the way how images are published. Every professional news agency today has many further sources – such as twitter, Flickr or Facebook - to choose from, which is advantageous on the one hand, but isn’t it a step in a direction that could let professional photojournalism “die”? But what are the reasons for that? Is it the next logical step in the development of photojournalism or is it “killing” the classical photojournalism, as we know it? In this dissertation I want to find out how professionals and citizen journalists coexist and what are the possible problems that this relationship could cause. To understand what citizen journalism is in detail, I want to take a closer look at the three variations that this kind of journalism has for me. To find a precise definition is not easy, as this kind of journalism is relatively new and even sources like Wikipedia don`t find a clear answer. 1. Accidential Journalists In the broader sense, all eyewitnesses with a smartphone are accidential journalists, as they witness a situation because they pass by. 2. Amateur Journalists A good example for amateur journalists are bloggers who might do a lot of research and try to expose hidden issues. 3. Citizen Journalists Citizens with a clear vision and political or humanistic interests are best suitable for the term “citizen journalist”.

Things As They Are presents the story of photojournalism over 50 years, taking us from the heyday of Life Magazine and the defining Family of Man exhibition, to the explosion of digital media in the 21st century. The story is told through the presentation of 120 landmark photojournalism stories as they were first seen on the pages of the pages of newspapers and magazines, revealing how the events of the world, the art of photographers, and the interests of publishers and the press have converged on the printed page. Produced in association with World Press Photo, the world's leading photojournalism contest on its 50th anniversary, the book also features all the World Press Photo 'pictures of the year' since 1955.
