Excerpt from The Innocents Abroad, or the New Pilgrims' Progress, Vol. 2 of 2: Being Some Account of the Steamship Quaker City's Pleasure Excursion to Europe and the Holy Land From the sanguinary sports of the Holy Inquisition; the slaughter of the Coliseum; and the dismal tombs of the Catacombs, I naturally pass to the picturesque horrors of the Capuchin Convent. We stopped a moment in a small chapel in the church to admire a picture of St. Michael vanquishing Satan - a picture which is so beautiful that I cannot but think it belongs to the reviled "Renaissance" notwithstanding I believe they told us one of the ancient old masters painted it - and then we descended into the vast vault underneath. Here was a spectacle for sensitive nerves! Evidently the old masters had been at work in this place. There were six divisions in the apartment, and each division was ornamented with a style of decoration peculiar to itself - and these decorations were in every instance formed of human bones! Excerpt from The Innocents Abroad or the New Pilgrims Progress, Being Some Account of the Steamship Quaker City's, Pleasure Excursion to Europe and the Holy Land, Vol. 1 of 2 This book is a record of a pleasure-trip. If it were a record of a solemn sc1entific expedition, it would have about it that gravity, that profundity, and that impressive incomprehensibility which are so proper to works of that kind, and withal so attractive. Yet not withstanding it is only a record ofa pic-nic, it has a purpose, which is, to suggest to the reader how he would be likely to see Europe and the East if he looked at them with his own eyes instead of the eyes of those who travelled in those countries before him. I make small pretence of showing any one how he ought to look at objects of interest beyond the sea - other books do that, and therefore, even ifi were competent to do it, there is no need.
