Adventure-based training has become an effective medium for delivering experiential training programs within a variety of disciplines such as; school outdoor education, corporate teamwork development, youth at risk and psychological counseling. In addition, Meyer & Wenger (1998) and Meyer (2000) were instrumental in pioneering research in to the efficacy of adventure-based training with sporting teams. This investigation adds to the growing body of knowledge in this area by demonstrating the positive effects an adventure training intervention has on athletes ability to learn new team and psychological skills. In addition, results indicated that individual and team performance might have been enhanced because of skills learnt during the intervention. This study examined the impact of an adventure-based training intervention on the group cohesion and psychological skills development of elite netball players. Data was gathered using both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. Many researchers are of the belief that the two methodologies compliment one another and thereby strengthen the total research model (Henderson, 1993). A phenomenological approach to qualitative data collection was followed based on the work by Dale (1996). Knowing how the intervention impacted on the participants from their perspective, is a critical question often overlooked by researchers. Results clearly indicated how athletes changed and developed during and after the intervention. Improved cohesion around task issues was especially evident, along with enhanced mental skills to handle the pressures of major competition. Lewin s change theory was examined to explain the learning process; modifications to this theory were suggested. Recommendations were outlined for improving sport psychology teaching practice, along with improved facilitation of adventure programming.

In sport, psychological skills training is as important as physical training. Psychological skills training (PST) package programs aim to train a variety of psychological skills simultaneously. While extensively utilized overseas, PST programs are seldomly conducted with South African elite sportspeople and are generally not available to local youth athletes. Furthermore, the impact of PST programs on life and general health and the related components of biological, psychological, social and spiritual well-being has been typically neglected, with research in this regard minimal or non-existent. For example, before this thesis, the impact of PST on the core health component of psychological well-being had not been evaluated, nor had the conceptual and/or empirical relationship between psychological skills and psychological well-being been investigated. Although PST is often conducted individually because of its specific and personal nature, group training should not be overlooked especially in South Africa where communal living is a way of life and community interventions are an important part of health promotion. The value of broad base PST programs is that they train psychological skills as life skills thus aiding overall biopsychosocialculturalspiritual development. With these considerations in mind a triangulated design involving individual, group and community interventions, as well as elite and expert case studies was utilized to evaluate the effectiveness of a PST program and to investigate the relationship between psychological skills and psychological well-being. Results based on quantitative and qualitative outcome and process measurements indicated general improvement in psychological skills, psychological well-being and sporting performance. Psychological skills and psychological well-being were found to be interrelated concepts, with overlapping components. Recommendations for ongoing and future research at individual, group and community level are made.

Elite sport typically provides obvious rewards in terms of recognition, finance and acclaim for athletic performance. Increasingly, we are becoming aware of the risks that elite athletes, their entourage, including families, sport-science support team and coaches are exposed to. Twelve original articles, seven commentaries and a corrigendum, are structured in a five chapter format. Chapter 1, comprising the Editorial, is titled “An Overview of Mental Health in Elite Sport: Changing the Play Book” to reflect the advocacy role of this article. Chapter 2 (“Finding the Sweet Spot”) amplifies the voice of key stakeholders across three qualitative studies with three additional commentaries. Quantitative evidence is presented in Chapter 3 which has the sub-title the “State of Play.” Chapter 4, entitled the “Field of Play”, includes three original publications which present contrasting conceptual approaches to guide researchers in hypothesis generation, formulation and implementation science. Finally, in Chapter 5, “Seeing the Ball Early”, prospective perspectives are provided in three publications reinforced by two commentaries. The future thinking ideas includes the use of virtual reality training, a broadening of the concept of mental health literacy, tackling stigma and focusing on the potential positive effect of the natural environment on well-being and recovery. To date the research topic has generated widespread in the field. For example, several articles have generated an Altmetric score above 40 with one publication meriting an Altmetric score of 102. This thesis provided an in-depth investigation into the phenomenon of stress within the unique culture of elite sports coaching. The overall aim of this thesis, and the series of studies contained herein, was to bridge the gap between research and practice by providing practical recommendations for sport organisations and sport psychology practitioners, informing coach education and development programmes, and developing an intervention aimed at helping coaches on the pathway to elite sport to develop psychological skills and attributes to help them coach effectively under pressure. The aim of the first phase of the research programme (studies one and two) was to provide an in-depth examination of elite coaches' experiences of stress. Specifically, using interviews with ] 2 world class sports coaches as the method of data collection, study one identified a wide range of organisational and competitive stressors. Findings suggested that these stressors were often experienced in combination rather than in isolation, and conflict within the organisation emerged as a key theme, indicating that communication skills might be important in helping coaches function effectively as part of a wider organisational team. Study two explored the same 12 coaches' responses to stressors, the perceived effects of experiencing stress, and the coping strategies coaches employed. Coaches discussed psychological reactions (e.g., negative cognitions, emotional responses), and suggested that their negative responses to stress could be projected onto their athletes. Coaches described a limited use of psychological skills to cope with stressors and tended to avoid stressors that provoked strain responses. Taken together, the findings of studies one and two highlighted the need for coaches to be aware of the demands that elite coaching might impose, and have a range of skills and strategies to help them manage these diverse demands. The aim of the second phase of the research programme (studies three and four) was to bridge the gap between research and practice. Specifically, the purpose of study three was to investigate successful coaches' perceptions of the factors that enable them to coach in a stressful Olympic environment. Data collection took the form of interviews with eight Olympic coaches from one of Great Britain's most successful Olympic teams (based on medal success). Psychological attributes (e.g., emotional control), preparation, (e.g., strategic approach), and coping at the event (e.g., team support), were factors that coaches perceived as important for successful Olympic coaching. Additionally, coaches offered specific suggestions for the training and development of those on the development pathway to elite sports coaching. The final study described the design, implementation and evaluation of a 'Coaching under Pressure' mental skills training (MST) intervention for sports coaches. While statistical significance was only observed for a small number of the observed variables, the practical significance of the intervention for coaches was underlined in the study. Specifically, coaches indicated that they understood the importance of being mentally prepared for the demands of coaching, that the programme was useful for them, that they had been satisfied with the MST programme, and, importantly, that they had experienced positive changes in their coaching performance as a result of the intervention. From a theoretical perspective, the findings of this thesis provided support for the complex nature of the stress transaction and have highlighted important considerations for the study of stress in coaching populations. From a practical perspective, sport organisations should be aware of the stressors that coaches can experience and ensure that coaches have the opportunity to interact and share best practice with their colleagues, and have access to psychological skills training at all stages of their careers.
