Excerpt from N. Y. State Hospitals Bulletin, Vol. 5: May 15, 1912 The only means by which we may interest our patients then is by the judicious employment of these two measures - work and play. Of these, work is the more important, for work possesses the element of material advancement and gain which play lacks. Work in that way appeals to another instinct - that of gain, of accumulating, of putting aside for to-morrow, of providing against the future. With the young, play in itself is sufficient. As age advances play becomes less important, and after middle age almost distasteful, and work becomes the dominating instinct. The lesson in this is that for the young we should provide more and a greater variety of amusements and less of monotonous work than for the older patients. Excerpt from The Hospital Bulletin, Vol. 2: March 15, 1906 In following my nature's impulse, visits, no and then, were made to his home, more especially during the declining period, where, in diversified talk, an hour 'would most agreeably be spent. The calls were made usually about noon, after his re turn from an accustomed walk, as this was to me most opportune; seldom at night, in spite Of he and his faithful nephew importuning the evening hours. At best, my own busy life made these rare, only several each year, but upon returning home the result Of each talk was reduced to writ ing in my diary Of sermons, lectures, etc., vol umes I have managed to compile and preserve as evidence Of pleasures enjoyed, passed.
