BY THE HORNS is an epic, sci-fi fantasy comic book series set in a dangerous world of magic and technology written by Markisan Naso, illustrated by Jason Muhr and colored by Andrei Tabacaru, published monthly by Scout Comics. Elodie hates unicorns. For nearly a year, she's dedicated her life to killing them all for trampling her husband. Exiled from her village home for selfishly neglecting her duties, Elodie and her companion, Sajen, search the continent of Solothus to exact bloody revenge. But to make unicorns extinct she’ll need to fake an alliance with Zoso and Rigby, two of the very beasts she hates most, and battle four wind sorcerers who are extracting magic from all the mystical creatures on the continent. With the ability to rip off the unicorn horns and combine them to form wizard-slaying weapons, Elodie has a fighting chance. But will she decide to use those gifts to save magic in the world? Or destroy all the unicorns left alive?

The Horn family is a poor family, but proud of their heritage; descending from some of the early settlers who helped carve out homes in the dense forest of the Big Thicket area of East Texas. The Horns live a very primitive lifestyle, which is hard, but good. Lonnie and Martha Horn are not educated people by most standards; however, they are self-educated far beyond their formal education. This proves to be an enigma to the people in the nearby town of Pine Hill. Their six children are smart and industrious. Martha and Lonnie give each child responsibilities at a very early age and require them to accept and execute those responsibilities in an adult manner. This invokes the wrath of many in the town of Pine Hill and the Foggy Bottom community where they live. Rex Horn, their oldest child has finished high school and is leaving home to attend college. Beth and Mark assume his responsibilities. Rex continues his long range courtship with Mary Ann Anderson who is now a student at Rice University. Rex is at Stephen F. Austin State College in Nacogdoches, Texas 160 miles away. . Since WWII has ended, progress is rapidly encroaching on the Foggy Bottom community. Modern civilization is about to come to that area. Lonnie and Martha are encouraging each of their children to plan toward a college education and they are struggling to position them financially to make that possible. This is very difficult on a poor dirt farm and requires all of the family’s effort.

The raw, ancient and primordial force symbolised by horns has long had associations with mystery, magick and power. Our ancestors often envisaged their gods as anthropomorphic beings who encapsulated this wild essence. Today the gods of the bull, the ram, the goat and the stag still hold tremendous power and are invoked at rituals by a new priesthood who continue to seek the wildness of nature and the inspiration that it holds. These deities transcend the safe and known boundaries of human structure, sometimes even luring us across the threshold of the known into the unknown worlds beyond. This unique anthology brings together the work of more than twenty people, including that of dedicated scholars and modern day mystics. Through their written and artistic contributions they illustrate some of the many manifestations of the Horned God. A true cornucopia of both insightful and well researched essays takes us from the well known Celtic Cernunnos and the legend of Herne the Hunter, to the goat-footed Greek Pan, the lesser known Slavic Veles and Egyptian Khnum. Horned serpents, unicorns, the tale of the Battle of the Bulls in the Irish Tain Bo Cuailnge, the Welsh Gwyn Ap Nudd and the faery Puck are all also considered. Then a wild hunt as we journey with the mystics who share their own experiences of the gods of the wildwood and untamed beasts. Each story is as different as the person who experienced it - and each illustrating in its own unique way a Horned God who is wild, unpredictable, loving - and at heart a trickster. For those who wish to dare a bit more than others, visionary meditation journeys to explore the mysteries of Cernunnos and Gwyn Ap Nudd are included. Horns of power would of course be nothing without the horns of beauty of the feminine divine, and in the final section of this anthology the reader is presented with works exploring horned goddesses, such as the lunar horned Hekate, Selene and Artemis and the antlered Elen. Whether through the mysteries of their existence, the vast scope of their influence or the endurance of their survival through to the modern day, each contribution provides a window into the wonders and mystery of the enduring magick of the horned gods.
