Excerpt from The Honourable James Thomason: Lieutenant-Governor N, -W. P., India, 1843-1853 A. D Mr. Thomason was appointed Lieutenant-Governor of the North-Western Provinces of India in 1843, and administered that Government till his death in 1853. The following account was published in the Calcutta Review shortly after, with a view to lay before the public the history of a great and good Administrator. And now, though after two-score years, it may still be of interest, not only for the noble example it gives to our Indian authorities, but also as tracing the origin of Institutions that owe their birth to Thomason. As Secretary to the Agra Government during the last two years of Mr. Thomason's life, I had the special opportunity of close and confidential intercourse with him both in public and private, in camp as well as in his Agra home. It also chanced that several years before, when Magistrate of Futtehpore, I had the privilege of attending upon him as he marched through that District, and thus of learning his wise and kindly attitude towards the officials and people about him in these his yearly tours.
