Excerpt from The History of Printing in America, Vol. 1 of 2: With a Biography of Printers The original book is rarely met with in the market, and large prices have been paid for copies occasionally found. A desire to reprint has often been manifested by prominent publishers, but has usually been connected with some project impairing the identity of the work, and involving a continuation of the history of the art, and the biographical notices, to a later period. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Excerpt from The History of Printing in America, Vol. 2 of 2: With a Biography of Printers These kinds of hieroglyphical' gazettes were not un known, it is said, among the natives of the more northern parts of America. Annexed is an engraving of a Copy of an Indian gazette, taken many years since by a French officer from the American original, with an explanation of the same. It relates to an expedition of a body of Cana dian warriors, who, soon after the settlement of this part of America, took up the hatchet in favor of the French against a hostile tribe that adhered to the English. It was communicated to me many years ago, and, soon after, I had it engraved for the Royal American Magazine. It had previously appeared in several works published in Europe. As a counterpart to research on the 1930s that has focused on liberal and radical writers calling for social revolution, David Welky offers this eloquent study of how mainstream print culture shaped and disseminated a message affirming conservative middle-class values and assuring its readers that holding to these values would get them through hard times. Through analysis of the era's most popular newspaper stories, magazines, and books, Welky examines how voices both outside and within the media debated the purposes of literature and the meaning of cultural literacy in a mass democracy. He presents lively discussions of such topics as the newspaper treatment of the Lindbergh kidnapping, issues of race in coverage of the 1936 Olympic games, domestic dynamics and gender politics in cartoons and magazines, Superman's evolution from a radical outsider to a spokesman for the people, and the popular consumption of such novels as the Ellery Queen mysteries, Gone with the Wind, and The Good Earth. Through these close readings, Welky uncovers the subtle relationship between the messages that mainstream media strategically crafted and those that their target audience wished to hear.
