Excerpt from The History of Napoleon Bonaparte, Vol. 1 of 2 It has been the endeavor of the author, during the progress of the work, not to write one line which, dying, he would wish to blot. In that solemn hour it will be a solace to him to reflect that he has done what he could to rescue one of the greatest and noblest of names from unmerited obloquy. Excerpt from The Life of Napoleon Buonaparte, Emperor of the French, Vol. 1 of 2: With a Preliminary View of the French Revolution On the execution of his task, it becomes the author to be silent. He is aware it must exhibit many faults but he claims credit for having brought to the undertaking a mind disposed to do his sub ject as impartial justice as his judgment could supply. He will be found no enemy to the person of Napoleon. The term of bestill ty is ended when the battle has been won, and the foe exists no longer. His splendid personal qualities-his great military actions and poutical services to France, will not, it is hoped, be found lessened in the narrative. Unhappily, the author's task involved a duty of another kind, 'the discharge of which is due to France, to Britain, to Europe, and to the world. If the general system of Napoleon has rested upon force or fraud, it is neither the great ness of his talents, nor the success of his undertakings, that ought to stifle the voice or dazzle the eyes of him who adventures to be 'his historian. The reasons, however, are carefully summed up where the author has presumed to express a favourable or unfa vourable opinion of the distinguished person of whom these vol umes treat; so that each reader may judge of their validity for himself. Excerpt from The History of Napoleon Bonaparte, Vol. 1 of 4 The dilapidated villa in Corsica, where Napoleon passed his infantile years, still exists, and the thoughtful tourist loses himself in pensive reverie as he wanders over the lawn where those children have played - as he passes through the vegetable garden in the rear of the house, which enticed them to toil with their tiny hoes and spades, and as he struggles through the Wil derness of shrubbery, now running to wild waste, in the midst of which once could have been heard the merry shouts of these infantile kings and queens. Their voices are now hushed in death. But the records of earth can not show a more eventful drama than that enacted by these young Bonapartes between the cradle and the grave. There is, in a sequestered and romantic spot upon the ground, an isolated granite rock, of wild and rugged form, in the fissures of which there is some thing resembling a cave, which still retains the name of Napoleon's Grotto. This solitary rock was the favorite resort of the pensive and meditative child, even in his earliest years. When his brothers and sisters were in most happy companionship in the garden or on the lawn, and the air resounded with their mirthful voices, Napoleon would steal away alone to his 'loved retreat. There, in the long and sunny afternoons, with a book in his hand, he would repose, in a recumbent posture, for hours, gazing. Upon the broad expanse of the Mediterranean spread out before him, and upon the blue sky, which overarched his head. Who can imagine the visions which in those hours arose before the expanding energies of that wonderful mind? Excerpt from The Life of Napoleon, Vol. 1 The life OF napoleon buonaparte, my father's last, largest, and, upon the whole, greatest work, has been for some years out of print, but it is only recently that I have been able to trace the ownership of the copyright. This knowledge obtained, and the work having been placed at my entire disposal by the kind ness of the gentleman who held the property, it is with great gratification that I now issue a new edition of this important history, at a price which will place it within the means of thousands to whom its former cost rendered the purchase altogether impracticable. The great object of my ambition, the diffusion of my father's fame, is thus eminently promoted. My revi sion of the text has been, of course, limited to such corrections as occurred to me of names, dates, and figures, and even in these respects I have had very little to do. My father's thorough devotion to his. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Life of Napoleon Bonaparte, Vol. 1 In the closing years of the eighteenth century European society began its effort to get rid of benevolent despotism, so called, and to secure its liberties under forms of constitutional government. The struggle began in France, and spread over the more important lands of continental Europe; its influence was strongly felt in England, and even in the United States. Passing through the phases of constitutional reform, of anarchy, and of military despotism, the movement seemed for a time to have failed, and to outward appearances absolutism was stronger after Waterloo than it had been half a century earlier. But the force of the revolution was only checked, not spent; and to the awakening of general intelligence, the strengthening of national feeling, and the upbuilding of a sense of common brotherhood among men, produced by the revolutionary struggles of this epoch, Europe owes whatever liberty and free government its peoples now enjoy. At the close of this period national power was no longer in the hands of the aristocracy, nor in those of kings; it had passed into the third social stratum, variously designated as the middle class, the burghers or bourgeoisie, and the third estate, a body of men as little willing to share it with the masses as the kings had been. Nevertheless, the transition once begun could not be stopped, and the advance of manhood suffrage has ever since been proportionate to the capacity of the laboring classes to receive and use it, until now at last, whatever may be the nominal form of government in any civilized land, its stability depends entirely upon the support of the people as a whole. That which is the basis of all government-the power of the purse - has passed into their hands. This momentous change was of course a turbulent one-the most turbulent in the history of civilization, as it has proved to be the most comprehensive. Excerpt from Memoirs of Napoleon Bonaparte, Vol. 1 What M. De Las Casas states Napoleon to have said in May, 1816, on the manner of writing his history, corroborates the opi nion I have expressed. It proves that all the facts and observa tions he communicated or dictated were meant to serve as mate rials. We learn from the Memorial, that M. De Las Casas wrote daily, and that the manuscript was read over by Napoleon, who Often made corrections with his own hand. The idea. Of a journal pleased him greatly. He fancied it would be a work of which the world could afford no other example. But there are passages in which the order of events is deranged; in others, facts are misrepresented, and erroneous assertions are made, I apprehend, not altogether involuntarily.
