Excerpt from The History of East Grinstead From an enormous mass of material available, never yet collected into one volume, and much of it never before put into print, I have selected that which is of general as distinguished from purely antiquarian interest. I have endeavoured to sketch the rise and progress of the town and the history of its institutions - those which have passed away, as well as those which still exist. In my researches I have received valuable help from very many, both old friends and those who, until this work was taken in hand, were entire strangers to me. My grateful thanks are especially due to the officials at Somerset House, the Record Office, the Charity Commission and Brighton Free Library and of the L.B. & S.C. Railway Company for courteous assistance readily rendered at all times. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

East Grinstead is a town halfway between London and the south coast. Two substantial villages—Ashurst Wood and Forest Row—also lie within the boundaries of its vast ancient parish. “It offers the most detailed, comprehensive and authoritative account of East Grinstead’s history ever produced ... On top of all that, the book is well illustrated ... and is very attractively produced.” Bulletin of the East Grinstead Society
