Excerpt from The History of Canada, From Its First Discovery to the Present Time, Vol. 1 of 2 Wholly independent of political parties without the slightest disposition to favour either one side or the other, but most anxious to deal fairly by both; with a.. Experience ripened by the progress of time and a close and constant observation of public affairs and public men, the author has applied himself to the task of giving the people of Canada a history of their country, The reader Will bear in mind that the author is only speaking of a general History of Canada. Many excellent works exist on detached portions of Canadian History. Garneau' 5 History of Lower Canada, up to the Union in 1840, although written from a French Canadian stand point, and very inac curate and misleading at times, is an excellent work on the Whole Parkman' s admirable series, based almost exclusively on records from the archives of France, or on the authority of French writers, completely exhaust all the more dramatic and romantic episodes of the Canada of the Old Regime, and clearly prove how frequently wrong and partial Garneau is. Excerpt from The History of Canada, Vol. 2 of 2: From Its First Discovery to the Present Time Home Government 3 and the prisoner made up his mind to accept the inevitable, and serve out the full term of his imprisonment. Contrary to expectation, however, the action of the Assembly prov ed eflhctive, and Collins was pardoned. But the shadow of his prison house never afterwards left him. He returned to the world a sadder and a wiser man, and there was little to complain of in the Freeman afterwards. He continued to publish it until Sep tember, 1834, when he fell a victim to the cholera, and the Freeman (lied with him. Having disposed of the Collins matter, the Assembly turned 1t-s attention to other business. In Upper, as well as in Lower Canada, Government still retained the casual and territorial revenues and these, in addition to a permanent grant of made several years previously, had now increased sufficiently to make the Execu tive completely independent of the Assembly, as regarded an annual vote for the Civil List. Strong resolutions were passed against this condition of things, and a firm determination evinced to acquire control of all the provincial revenues. Excerpt from The History of Canada: From Its First Discovery to the Present Time The present condition of Canada points to a future national greatness of no ordinary magnitude. Her inland seas and noble rivers have already become the highways of a vast and rapidly-increasing commerce; and the morning voice of a new nation resounds over a scene as varied as it is beautiful. In the foreground stand the populous cities and flourishing towns, which stud the margins of her rivers and the shores of her lakes; in the perspective, repose the free and happy homes of her rural population. The farmer is the owner, in fee-simple, of the soil he tills, and rejoices in an independence of the most sturdy and complete character. In the various industrial professions, enterprise, economy, and prudence rarely fail to secure success, while in numberless instances they have been the avenues to wealth. This country abounds with merchants and manufacturers who have been eminently successful; and every-day experience presents to our notice mechanics that have won their way to positions alike well-merited and honourable. The present of Canada supplies a kaleidoscope, brilliant with promise, through which we may gaze at the future. While it was under the dominion of France, several histories were published, but none have given a narrative of events subsequent to the period when Charlevoix finished his History. Excerpt from History of Canada, Vol. 1 of 3: From the Time of Its Discovery Till the Union Year (1840-1) As regards the text, the tenor of the author's narrative has been scrupulously observed, although, in a number of places, some of his sentences have been abridged, in order to bring the volumes within a reasonable compass, no less than to make room for illustra tive matter; which latter is, for the most part, appended in supplementary foot notes, or in additions to the author's own notes. In both these cases, an initial B. Superadded, plainly shows the amount of material for which the translating editor alone is responsible.
