Excerpt from The Historical Development of School Readers and Method Ln Teaching Reading I have seen no explanation of the discrepancy in the above dates. After a brief introduction, beginning with the following statement: Philipps Melanchthon desires the salvation of all children, follow the alphabet, large and small letters, the vocals, diphthongs, then the Lord's Prayer, Ave Maria, the Creed, Psalms xlvi., ii., viii., and the Ten Commandments. So far, the arrangement of the book is in the customary Catholic form. After this, however, almost the entire Ser mon on the Mount, John xiii., and Romans xii., are freely translated. Then there follow fourteen pages of secular material, namely, sayings of the wise men of Greece. Luther's child's little primer contained the Lord's Prayer, the Commandments, the Creed and the Catechism, after the fashion of the Catholic primers of the time. Reading instruction is too often grounded in a narrowly defined "science of reading" that focuses exclusively on cognitive skills and strategies. Yet cognition is just one aspect of reading development. This book guides K–8 educators to understand and address other scientifically supported factors that influence each student's literacy learning, including metacognition, motivation and engagement, social–emotional learning, self-efficacy, and more. Peter Afflerbach uses classroom vignettes to illustrate the broad-based nature of student readers’ growth, and provides concrete suggestions for instruction and assessment. The book's utility is enhanced by end-of-chapter review questions and activities and a reproducible tool, the Healthy Readers Profile, which can be downloaded and printed in a convenient 8 1/2" x 11" size.
