You could also receive a fine, in addition to recieving penalty points on your licence, or even end up with a driving disqualification. In the most serious cases however, you may be sent to prison. However, failure to comply with the other rules of the Code will not, in itself, mean a prosecution, The Highway Code may however be used in evidence in any court proceedings under the Traffic Acts to establish liability. Knowing and Applying the Rules Knowing and applying the rules contained in The Highway Code could significantly reduce road casualties. But cutting the number of deaths and injuries that occur on our roads every day is a responsibility we all share. The code, which covers all of the UK and includes national variations, is now compulsory for highway/road authorities in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. It applies to all single carriageway roads and dual carriageways with a speed limit of 40 mph or less. In Roads Were Not Built for Cars, Carlton Reid reveals the pivotal—and largely unrecognized—role that bicyclists played in the development of modern roadways. Reid introduces readers to cycling personalities, such as Henry Ford, and the cycling advocacy groups that influenced early road improvements, literally paving the way for the motor car. When the bicycle morphed from the vehicle of rich transport progressives in the 1890s to the “poor man’s transport” in the 1920s, some cyclists became ardent motorists and were all too happy to forget their cycling roots. But, Reid explains, many motor pioneers continued cycling, celebrating the shared links between transport modes that are now seen as worlds apart. In this engaging and meticulously researched book, Carlton Reid encourages us all to celebrate those links once again.
