The Haunted and the Haunters By Edward Bulwer-Lytton Novelist and statesman, third son of General Earle Bulwer of Heydon and Dalling, Norfolk, and of Elizabeth Lytton, heiress of Knebworth, Herts, was born in London, and educated privately and at Cambridge He began to write when still a boy, and published, in 1820, Ismael and other Poems. His marriage in 1825 to Rosina Wheeler, an Irish beauty, caused a quarrel with his mother, and the loss of his income, and thus incidentally gave the impulse to his marvellous literary activity. The marriage proved an unhappy one, and was terminated by a separation in 1836. During its continuance, however, his life was a busy and productive one, its literary results including Falkland [1827], Pelham [1828], Paul Clifford [1830], Eugene Aram [1832], The Pilgrims of the Rhine, Last Days of Pompeii, Rienzi [1835], besides England and the English, Athens its Rise and Fall, and innumerable tales, essays, and articles in various reviews and magazines, including the New Monthly, of which he became editor in 1831. Excerpt from The Haunted and the Haunters, or the House and the BrainThe story which follows has al ways seemed to me absolutely unique. At the present day the occult is becoming almost the fashion in fiction, and many hundreds of stories have appeared in which a prominent part is played by hypno tism, by magic of various sorts and even by direct apparitions. It has come in my way to read very many of such things, yet I can think of none so gruesome - none so thor oughly calculated to make your flesh creep, as the fat boy re marked in Pickwick - as this which was written more than half a cen tury ago, when the spirit of the times was so utterly different. I am surprised to hear that it has not hitherto been published in full in America. The shortened form which is more commonly seen appears to have been a later recension by theauthor, who thought that the latter part of his tale bore too close a re semblance to the plot which he later worked up more fully in A Strange Way. Here, however, we have it in its original and unabridged form, and I think that all readers will agree that the part which was later omitted adds greatly to the interest of the story.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. "Excuse me; I have no desire to be ridiculed as a superstitious dreamer,—nor, on the other hand, could I ask you to accept on my affirmation what you would hold to be incredible without the evidence of your own senses. Let me only say this, it was not so much what we saw or heard (in which you might fairly suppose that we were the dupes of our own excited fancy, or the victims of imposture in others) that drove us away, as it was an undefinable terror which seized both of us whenever we passed by the door of a certain unfurnished room, in which we neither saw nor heard anything. And the strangest marvel of all was, that for once in my life I agreed with my wife, silly woman though she be,—and allowed, after the third night, that it was impossible to stay a fourth in that house. Accordingly, on the fourth morning I summoned the woman who kept the house and attended on us, and told her that the rooms did not quite suit us, and we would not stay out our week." She said dryly, "I know why; you have stayed longer than any other lodger. Few ever stayed a second night; none before you a third. But I take it they have been very kind to you."

William Hope Hodgson spent his early life as a cabin boy, before becoming a prolific author. Although best-known nowadays for two novels – The House on the Borderland (1908) and The Night Land (1912) – his short fiction was also extremely popular in its day. Many of the earliest ghost stories and tales of hauntings, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive.
