Deep geological repositories are sited and designed to protect humans and the environment from the hazards associated with radioactive waste. A repository safety case needs to address the period fro which it is possible to contain the radioactivity. Furthermore, safety is usually assessed in terms of the primary indicators of dose and risk and, in order to evaluate these indicators, assumptions must be regarding rhe habits of potentially exposed groups (e.g. diet, lifestyle and land use) and these may change over timescales of just a few years. The need to deal with such a wide range fo timescales gives rise to a range of issues regarding the methods and presentation of safety assessements. The main objective of the workshop was to identify and discuss approaches related to, and work done on, the timescales issue within national radioactive waste management programmes in the context of assessing post-closure safety. The proceedings include the presentations made as well as a summary of the discussions held.

The classification of radioactive waste varies from state to state. This results in different management procedures for each country, while following IAEA and OECD/NEA recommendations. Radioactive waste comes from numerous sources. The largest volumes are generated by the decommissioning and dismantling of nuclear facilities. Long-lived, medium- and high-activity waste – categorized as the most hazardous types of waste – are in fact largely produced by nuclear power reactors, spent fuel reprocessing plants and nuclear accidents. Final disposal of very low-activity, low-activity and very short-lived waste is well controlled. Various long-term radioactive waste management options have been considered in order to protect humans and the environment both now and in the future. Most experts worldwide agree that disposal in engineered facilities, or repositories, located in appropriate formations deep underground, provides a suitable option. Engineered geological disposal is seen as a radioactive waste management end-point providing security and safety in a sustainable manner that does not necessarily require monitoring, maintenance and institutional control. Internationally, this option is regarded to be technically feasible, acceptable from an ethical and environmental viewpoint, as well as acceptable from an international legal perspective. The Stockholm International Conference on Geological Repositories: Political and Technical Progress brought together over 200 high-level decision makers and other interested stakeholders from the national, regional and local levels, regulatory bodies and radioactive waste management implementing organisations. In addition to providing a forum for the exchange of the most up-to-date information in the field, it also served to strengthen international co-operation on radioactive waste management and disposal issues.
