Then you'll find tips for growing over 100 different annuals from seedand 12 types of spring and summer bulbs—all based on his hands-on experience, going beyond the information available on the seed packet. Every one of the hundreds of stunning photographs is taken personally by Mattus from the flowers growing on his own farm in Massachusetts. Just a small selection of the annuals covered: aster, cornflower, chrysanthemum, impatiens, larkspur, California poppy, delphiniums, sunflowers, morning glory, kiss-me-over-the-garden-gate, salvia, and zinnia. The Times Best Gardening Books of the Year 2021 'The Flower Yard is simply gorgeous. Inspirational, sumptuous and packed with refreshingly down-to-earth advice. I love this book.' Nigel Slater 'The Kew-trained king of the small-space garden.' Guardian Arthur Parkinson's town garden is like a path of pots, a tiny, exposed stage on bricks. Despite its small size, a flower-filled jungle in Venetian tones is grown here each year, in defiance of urbanisation. The plants act like drapes, closing gently as their growth engulfs the front door, from either side of the path, to the buzz of precious bees. This is gardening done entirely in pots, yet on a grand scale that will inspire anyone who wants their doorstep or patio to be a glamorous and lively canvas that nurtures them visually and mentally. From jewel scatterings of crocus, flocks of parrot tulips and scented sweet peas to galaxies of single dahlias, towering giraffes of amaryllises grown inside for winter and endless vases of cut blooms through the seasons. With his bantam hens at his feet, Arthur shares his life, knowledge, flair and influences for planting creatively, all of which combine to create a space that's rich in ever-changing colour and life.

Excerpt from The Handbook to the Flower Garden and Greenhouse The following short lessons for the cultivation of all the popular flowers and plants will be acceptable to those who grow a variety of subjects, and who have general garden establishments. It has always been my aim to avoid mystery - to use the plainest and simplest way of doing everything, from the mixing of the compost to the perfecting of the plant. I differ from most of the previous writers on the culture of many subjects, for I recommend nothing that is difficult to obtain or offensive in its nature. I have, as far as I could do so, made gardening a pleasure. I do not pretend that the numerous plants and flowers mentioned here are all that could be cultivated; but I will say they comprise the best, the most popular, and the least troublesome of all our floral beauties, and few persons will desire a better collection than may be found among the subjects in the present work. Some of the ordinary operations in a garden are described at the beginning, that they may not have to be repeated in treating of particular plants. I am thus enabled to say briefly, "Shift this, or prune that, or repot the other," instead of going over the same ground again when touching upon the numerous plants, which, in fact, require the same treatment. Nevertheless, some of the most popular subjects have tempted me to give particular directions, which are impressed upon the mind of the grower by distinct lessons, simply because I know many are apt to look for the article they require, and expect to find all the necessary information under that one head. General Management Of A Greenhouse A greenhouse is a structure for the protection of plants of temperature climates, requiring in this country but little artificial heat.
