Excerpt from The Great English Masters However, it is true, that each epoch of history of any of the civilized nations, has seen a certain amount of art, but an art only, which was created by the art of the time the new art, which in universal history, alone can be considered. Each nation is limited in its character and in its creative powers. As soon as everybody, living in its midst, has brought out everything in his ability, something new must take the vacated place, something, which may possess peculiarities with new possibilities, with enough saved-up force, to realize them too. Other nationalities will perhaps follow, because this novel art will satisfy their longing, or because it lies so much in the line of that general developement, which, so mysteriously ties together mankind of a certain period. This principle may be expressed also in the Following manner: The demands of an era are felt irrespective of nationality, but one nation only is always predestined to fulfil these demands. The English nation was the predestined one in the eighteenth century. It was a period of universal revolutions, not simply changes, such as are demanded by each generation, but revolutions, demanding a new standard of humanity, the modern humanity and all forms of life and art, had to be revised from the beginning. The civilisation upon the Continent, presided over by France, was beautiful and rich, but sterile. A finish, such as was demanded by the future could be obtained only, from England. Excerpt from Masters of English Literature An Introductory chapter is included so as to present a very brief survey of the whole field of English literature At the end of each chapter there is a list of books and magazine articles. It is hoped that these reference lists will be especially helpful to those who wish to make a fuller study of the author. Instead of inserting separate chapters on the literary movements and tendencies of the age, I have included such matter in the body of the biographical and critical comment on each author. Excerpt from Old English Masters In the selection of painters for representation, the title Old English Masters was thought to be broad enough to include a Scotchman like Raeburn, who was English in his art, and narrow enough to shut out an Englishman like Bonington, who was French in his art. The endeavor was to pick the best men of the best period - the period from about 1750 to 1850. The painters who flourished in that blossoming-time of English art were primarily painters of the portrait, the landscape, and the genre piece. The pictures which Mr. Cole has engraved represent them in these sub jects. In every case the example chosen shows the painter at his best or is designed to show him in a different style or certain period of his career. The private houses of England and Scotland were specially invaded to secure many of these pictures, and in this connection acknowledgment should be made of the great courtesy and kindness shown by the owners of the pictures in placing them at the service of the engraver. It is proper also at this time to thank, for good counsel in the matter of selecting the painters and their pictures, Mr. Sidney Colvin, Sir Edward j. Poynter, Mr. Lionel Cust, Mr. Holmes of Windsor, Mr. Strong of Chatsworth, Mr. Reeve of Norwich, Mr. Charles Fairfax Murray, Mr. Martin Colnaghi, Mr. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Masters of English Literature Some explanation is needed to account for the appearance of this book, in a period which sets so much value on specialised study. The writer would justify it by the view, first, that in English literature there are certain authors who may be classed as obligatory - concerning whom total ignorance is a defect at least to be concealed; and secondly, that the ordinary reader has neither the time nor inclination to study all these authors at first hand. An attempt has there fore been made to put together a survey of the literature which should concern itself only with such authors as can be deemed in this manner essential; with the hope that it might usefully supplement the necessarily partial knowledge pos sessed by young or busy people, and perhaps serve as a guide to those who wish to extend their reading. Excerpt from The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office HE object which led to the enterprise of this subject was essentially practical. Considerable outcry had been raised against the interpolation into the service by the Celebrant of parts of the Unreformed Office. The outcry interpreted this action as throwing doubt or discredit on the Office of our Church. And this interpretation is justified by the open avowals of many who are addicted to this practice. They allege defect or deficiency in our Office. Others, indeed, without such allegation or conscious admission, defend their interpolations as conducing to greater fulness or richness. The object of this work in part'is to attempt to disprove the charges of insufficiency and to show the redundancy of such interpolations. The nature of the interpolations in View has been already defined. There is no reference to any private1 intercessions or devo tions of the Celebrant, but to the direct interpolation of portions of other Offices. Excerpt from Howrah The deep channel alternates from left to right and vice cersa according to the windings of the river, except where deflected by the large tributaries which debouch into it at the southern limit of this district. Proceeding from Howrah Bridge, the deep channel runs on the Calcutta side in the Calcutta Reach past the Fort and Kidderpore to Garden Reach. At Rajganj, Opposite Hangman Point, it crosses over to the Howrah Side, and follows the Sankrail Reach as far as Melancholy (menikhali) Point. It then zigzags from left to right at each bend. Excerpt from Great Masters These essays were written a year ago for the pages of McClure's. In the magazine they were of necessity very much cut down, for most practical reasons of space and for the insertion of engravings. But as their ideal was that of condensed notices, they may not have suffered much in their earlier abridged form. What form they have is the result of a desire to write for a large public, which public needs the ordinary biographical statements regarding illustrious lives, and also of a wish so to write that those who had given time and thought to the works of these artists, should feel that they were expressly addressed - in short, that an artist might be interested in these expositions of the lives and doings of certain other artists, and find therein some freshness of view, while, at the same time, any reader might have his memories established by the story, and his interest increased in the works of art described or referred to. For these purposes, I have followed the simplest of all plans, the record of the working life of each artist, which explains his genius, and which keeps us within the salutary consideration of the outside limits that define it.
