Excerpt from The Finances of American Trade Unions We can easily see that to work successfully, this fiscal arrangement not only requires uniformity of membership dues and benefits in all locals, as with the Community of funds system, but necessitates, as has already been inti mated, approximate uniformity in the quality, skill and earn ings of the membership.22 It has therefore been adopted by few unions, the great majority adhering to the plan of main taining a central fund by taxing the members of each local organization a fixed per capita amount at regular monthly or quarterly intervals. We have already seen that the form of the revenue charge differed somewhat in the oldest organizations. In the Typo graphical Union and in the Journeymen Horseshoers, it consisted of a small percentage of the receipts of local unions; while in the Iron Molders, a fixed sum was levied upon each local, proportioned to the number of delegates that each was entitled to send to the general convention. Both of these methods, however, proved unsatisfactory, and were early replaced by a periodic per capita tax, levied theoretically upon the individual members, but paid directly out of the funds of the local unions. Excerpt from The American Labor Year Book, 1926, Vol. 7 Redoubled effort has been made, in preparing this issue of the american labor year book, to turn out a volume of practical usefulness to the practical worker in the trade union and labor political ranks. Into the following pages has been packed as much as possible of the information which the worker needs in his trade union meeting, in noon-hour discussions with his fellow-workingmen, or on the stand for his political party, to back up his arguments and drive home his points. In wage negotiations, laying out union tactics, or shaping political programs, knowledge of the facts Of industry and of what the other branches Of the labor movement are doing is essential. To search through the multitude of Official reports and books on any industrial subject - or even to discover what books and reports exist on it - is Often beyond the limited time and energy Of the worker. To condense into useable size, and to interpret accurately the information gathered, may be beyond the limited experience Of one not accustomed to handling statistics. His to meet the needs Of this situation that the american labor year book is written. The first section, on Industrial and Labor Conditions, has been nearly doubled in size. Here will be found, in easily understood form, figures on industrial production, corporation profits, new mergers and trusts, the workers' share in the product Of industry, the trend Of wages, hours, unemployment, child labor, and related subjects, collected from widely scattered sources. Probably no equal number of pages anywhere else will give so clear a picture of the conditions which today confront the mass of American workers. Excerpt from The Americanization of Labor: The Employers Offensive Against the Trade Unions, With an Introd, by S. Nearing Business class power in the United States is not the result of accident. Since the organization of the Standard Oil Co. In 1870, of the United States Steel Corporation in 1901, and the passage Of the Federal Reserve Act in 1913 the business interests have added steadily to their wealth and to their control over the political and social machinery of the country. Probably there is no country in the world to-day where the business interests occupy a position of such unchallenged power as that which they now hold in the United States. Economic and historic forces have united to push the United States business interests into the foreground Business lead ers have planned and manipulated. Deliberately they have forged the links in the Chain of their economic power. To-day they have, almost within their grasp, a monopoly of the best exploiting opportunities in the world. A brief description of some of the more important factors in this quick rise to power forms an excellent background from which to consider a de tailed study Of the Offensive recently inaugurated by the Ameri can employers against the organized workers.
