Chinese academic traditions take zuo ren—self-fulfillment in terms of moral cultivation—as the ultimate goal of education. To many in contemporary China, however, the nation seems gripped by moral decay, the result of rapid and profound social change over the course of the twentieth century. Placing Chinese children, alternately seen as China's greatest hope and derided as self-centered "little emperors," at the center of her analysis, Jing Xu investigates the effects of these transformations on the moral development of the nation's youngest generation. The Good Child examines preschool-aged children in Shanghai, tracing how Chinese socialization beliefs and methods influence their construction of a moral world. Delving into the growing pains of an increasingly competitive and changing educational environment, Xu documents the confusion, struggles, and anxieties of today's parents, educators, and grandparents, as well as the striking creativity of their children in shaping their own moral practices. Her innovative blend of anthropology and psychology reveals the interplay of their dialogues and debates, illuminating how young children's nascent moral dispositions are selected, expressed or repressed, and modulated in daily experiences.

Raising Good Children explores the pressures and difficulties of bringing up children in the twenty first century, from babies and toddlers through to problematic teenagers. This is a guide which suggests ways in which the young can be given direction through love and security to help them embrace their responsibilities and become useful members of society. The author draws upon a life-time of working with children to identify behavioural problems and then answers them by using scripture and Christian teachings. She argues that the self-centred attitudes of many youngsters today emanate from a lack of meaning in their lives, which can be provided by following the guidelines given by Jesus and by adhering to the laws of God. She quotes many examples to show how following these guidelines helps to solve the problems of antisocial behaviour so often associated with the young together with the difficulties connected with adolescent behaviour. The aim is to instil good qualities in children, to help them to have a meaningful relationship with their Father-Mother God and to become respectful and thoughtful adults. The author argues that many of the problems with young people are the fault of society. She suggests that the seductive presentation of legal drugs adversely influences those who are young and vulnerable. It is this, she maintains, which has led to the widespread problems with illegal drug abuse and its associated crimes. Although addressed mainly to parents, Raising Good Children has much to offer to teachers and to all who are involved with the education of children.

Abstract: Fundamental principles concerning the creation of respect by training and example are described. Development of a child's morals through the various age stages of moral reasoning is illustrated in a conversational format with numerous examples for parents and child psychologists. The 3 principal sections are: 1) laying the foundations of moral development from birth to age 3, 2) helping the child through the 5 stages of moral reasoning, from preschool to adulthood, 3) specific concerns that occur independent of age or stage of moral reasoning. These include getting the child to talk to you, the fairness appproach to resolving conflict, the pros and cons of television watching, and moral challenges such as sex, drugs, and alcohol. A list of recommended children's books, along with information and guidelines on moral research and drawing out a child's moral reasoning are appended. (wz).
