Excerpt from The Glasgow Medical Journal, Vol. 43: January to June, 1895 As a temporary hypnotic for acute cases in private practice, and as a sedative for chronic and incurable cases of excitement, it is of great service, but its administration requires to be carefully watched, as with little warning symptoms of great severity may arise, and the life of the patient be endangered. In writing this paper acknowledgment is due to the' excellent and exhaustive paper by Priestley in recent numbers of the Medical Chronicle, and thanks are due to Dr. R. M. Buchanan for his assistance in the post-mortem examination of organs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Glasgow Medical Journal, Vol. 21: January to June, 1884 BY robert kirk, M. D. Out-door Physician Accoucheur to the Western Infirmary. Not more than ten years have elapsed since the remarkable disease, of which I have the opportunity of showing you an example to-night, was first recognised and described by Sir William Gull although no doubt, as Charcot remarks, it must have existed lo Efiously. During the last few years it has become wide y own, and has attracted a large amount of attention - a result chiefly due to the investigations of Dr. Ord, of St. Thomas's Hospital, whose descriptions of the disease in its various stages, and whose account of the postmortem ap arances in two fatal cases, have thrown much light on the su jcet, and great] enhanced the interest it has excxted. The disease is slow an pro 've, and is characterised clinically by a gradual increase 0 bulk, with a general swelling of the integument, and a peculiar physiognom while along with this condition there supervene slowness o speech and of move ment, torpor of thought, subnormal tem rature, and diminu tion of the ingesta and excretions. Near y all the functions of the body seem to suffer more or less, so that Charcot's com parison of the patients to hibernating animals is not altogether mappropriate. But while the general characteristics of the affection may be thus briefly summed up, in detail it presents many minor peculiarities to our notice, most of which will No. 1. B Vol. XXI. Excerpt from The Glasgow Medical Journal, Vol. 83: January to June, 1915 There is no record of hospitals for the sick, either under that or any other name, in pagan Rome; but it is to be supposed that some existed, for the first hospital of which we have any record was of considerable size, and history shows that all things grow from small beginnings: nothing springs suddenly into full development. Excerpt from The Glasgow Medical Journal, Vol. 53: January to June, 1900 Digby appears with Drs. Willis, Allen, King, Cox, Thom, Gilbert. Is Lady Hobby one of the Evesham family? The pastor was not so good a gossip as the rector; on the other hand, he is not so superstitious, and, if he is archaic in his account of the colours Of urines, he is judicious in his remarks on the convulsions of children. I have no adequate answer to the question who tended the poor, or who looked after those who had neither poverty nor riches. Of these the profession is not usually negligent: yet medical history has more to say of the attendants on royalty and wealth. It is natural, since from the upper grades of the profession was to be expected all that would forward the practice by sound theory based on educated observation. One regrets all the same that so little survives of the personal history of the ancient Gideon Grays, who toiled in the acquisition of experience, and are now remembered only by the cheap witlings who read their receipts with the contempt born of imperfect knowledge. If the profession had as little to attract as Burton Would have us believe, the blame rested with the clerical profession, whose learning or genius failed to point the road to more solid gains of knowledge. Excerpt from The Glasgow Medical Journal, Vol. 89: January to June, 1918 The advent of the electron theory has given us the means of building up a very reasonable explanation of the physical aspect of colour. Although we are not concerned at present with the constitution of matter, it will be of assistance to picture what an atom of matter is now supposed to be. We picture the atom as being composed of nothing but positive and negative electricities. We imagine a core of positive electricity (whatever that may be), and embedded in it a number of particles of negative electricity, each particle of which is called an electron. Around this central core we picture a ring of satellite electrons, revolving at an enormous speed, approaching the velocity of light. Excerpt from The Glasgow Medical Journal, Vol. 85: January to June, 1916 The number of flies in every part of the world is dependent upon the existence of conditions suitable for their development, and it may at once be said. That the whole problem of the house fly as a nuisance and as a menace to health hangs around its processes cf breeding and feeding. A full appreciation of the problem and of the means of its solution rests on an intimate knowledge of these processes. It will therefore be our first duty to make ourselves acquainted with the development of the fly from egg to adult, with the structure and function of certain parts of its body, and with its habits of feeding.
