I was so excited. I was finally going to get to stay at the Claiborne Hotel. I had grown up in the San Francisco area, and the Clairborne Hotel had sat grandly on one of the highest hills in the city, looking out over the San Francisco Bay. As a kid I had always dreamed about what it would be like to live in a place like that, or even stay there for a few nights. The Clairborne had a storied history. It was built as a resort spa back in the late 1800s. I’m not sure who built the hotel, but I do know that at one time it was a hangout for the mob. They would send some of their old cronies over from back East to check into the hotel. There was a lot of talk that a number of them never checked out; at least not in the traditional way that is. Before I go on, I guess I should introduce myself. My name is Tony DeMarco. I’m named for my great grandfather. He was a colorful character in old San Francisco, and was reported to have been part of the syndicate that owned this very same hotel! My grandma always said I looked exactly like him. Find out what happens to Tony DeMarco when he spends a night in his grandfather’s hotel! Ages 9 and up. Educational Versions have exercises designed to meet Common Core standards. The scarecrow in the Williams’s field was certainly scary, and not just to crows. Bobby couldn’t say why exactly he found it as scary as he did. He just did. He told himself it was only some material filled with straw, but avoided going near it, all the same. He preferred it if he didn’t have to even think about it. The scarecrow had been there forever, or so it seemed. It had certainly been there as long as he’d been around, and as far as Bobby was concerned that was forever enough. Find out what happens when Bobby is forced to go into the cornfield and face the scarecrow in this short but creepy tale. Ages 9 and up. This was our last chance. I know that my wife thought this was a folly at first, but tomorrow she would see how right I was. Tomorrow a lot of our dreams would come true. Let me give you a bit of background. I had been a normal working slob my whole life. I was unhappy at my job as an accountant, but I was even unhappier when I got laid off. It wasn’t my fault I wasn’t working anymore. The economy was bad and there weren’t as many businesses that needed auditing and bookkeeping. I was sick and tired of being at the mercy of someone else, so I decided to go into business for myself. Since I knew there wasn’t enough work for accountants, I decided I needed to do something new. Find out what happens when the author buys a vineyard and begins making wine. Ages 9 and up. Educational Versions have exercises designed to meet Common Core standards. Steal the Stars, a debut novel by Nat Cassidy, is based on the science fiction podcast from Tor Labs, written by Mac Rogers. Dakota “Dak” Prentiss guards the biggest secret in the world. They call it “Moss.” It’s your standard grey alien from innumerable abduction stories. It still sits at the controls of the spaceship it crash-landed eleven years ago. A secret military base was built around the crash site to study both Moss and the dangerous technology it brought to Earth. The day Matt Salem joins her security team, Dak’s whole world changes. It’s love at first sight—which is a problem, since they both signed ironclad contracts vowing not to fraternize with other military personnel. If they run, they’ll be hunted for what they know. Dak and Matt have only way to be together: do the impossible. Steal Moss and sell the secret of its existence. And they can’t afford a single mistake.

Fifteen “alarming and gorgeous” stories from the National Book Critics Circle Award-winning author about the quiet terrors of American life (The Boston Globe). Laura Kasischke, national bestselling author of The Life Before Her Eyes and White Bird in a Blizzard, both adapted for film, looks behind the quietude of domesticity to find the “strange and unexpected and sometimes extraordinary” in this collection of stories that “defies simple definition” (Booklist). In “Mona,” a mother violates her daughter’s privacy certain she’s hiding a dreadful secret. In “You’re Going to Die,” a girl delights in the cruel power she has over her ailing father. In “Search Continues for Elderly Man,” a little boy’s invitation for a lonely old neighbor to come out and play takes a shocking turn. In “Our Father,” children camouflage their sleeping dad in dirty rags to protect him. But from what?; and in the title story, a woman agrees to carry a package aboard a plane for a stranger despite—or perhaps, because of—her fantasizes about potential disaster. Populated by people coming to terms with a life that is just a little bit off—after there is a tiny mummified heart in a dresser drawer of a suburban home, If a Stranger Approaches You is “an important addition to [Kasischeke’s] own body of work and to the contemporary literature of end times” —NPR Books
