Excerpt from The Gentleman's Magazine, and Historical Chronicle, Vol. 60: For the Year 1790; Part the Second Tim may (cent a paradox; but a great thing it is, when thoroughly eonfidered. This, no doubt. Made the old Brttain anl'wer King Henry the Second, that he believed the Brttilh language would re main to the day of judgment (gtraldus Topograph. Wall.apud Camden); and it was no hard matter for Tallelin to foretell, from natural caufes, that the Britains would for ever prelerve their language, though they loll their land. Dr. Davies knew thus fccret, ancl made an excellent ul'e of it in his DIC tionary, by chuling the moli proper ex amples out of the poets to prove his worth; but Mr. Edward Lluyd knew very little or nothing of it. As appeals from his Works, and an elegiac Qywydd he wrme on Mary Qteen of England, and which I have by me. One would think, at firfi light, that the poetry is clogged With lh many rules that it is impotftble to write a poem of common fenfe in this language But the vafi number of flexions of conl'onants in It, and the variation in declcnfinns, make it almoll as copious as fourpr five lan guages d 'ect together; and confe quently he poetin the Cambrian lan guage, for all the linfinel's of his rules, hath as great a fcope and ufe of words as in any other tongue whatl'oever; and, for further proof hereof, I refer to thole great and curious colleflions of the works of the antient poets we have all over North Wales.
