Can love and friendship blossom on a rooftop? The residents in Brisbane’s Riverview apartment block barely know each other. They have no idea of the loneliness, the lost hopes and dreams, being experienced behind their neighbours’ closed doors. Vera, now widowed, is trying her hardest to create a new life for herself in an unfamiliar city environment. Unlucky-in-love Maddie has been hurt too many times by untrustworthy men, yet refuses to give up on romance. Ned, a reclusive scientist, has an unusual interest in bees and worm farms. Meanwhile, the building’s caretaker, Jock, is quietly nursing a secret dream. When a couple of gardening enthusiasts from one of the apartments suggest they all create a communal garden on their rooftop, no one is interested. Not at first, anyway. But as the residents come together over their budding plants and produce, their lives become interconnected in ways they could never have imagined. From award-winning novelist Barbara Hannay, The Garden of Hopes and Dreams is a timely and uplifting story about the importance of community and the healing power of connection.

New York Times bestselling inspirational author Karen Kingsbury teams up with NFL quarterback Alex Smith to deliver a heartwarming story about never giving up on your dreams—even when setbacks seem too big to overcome. Alex and his best friend, Bobby, have high hopes for their futures. They may only be in grade school, but Alex dreams of throwing touchdown passes in the NFL, while Bobby fantasizes about soaring above the clouds as a pilot. But as they make moves to follow their dreams, trials arise that could deter them. With a little encouragement from Alex’s grandfather and a lot of dedication, they learn to never give up on their dreams, no matter how big and unreachable they may seem. With illustrations by Greg Banning, Smith’s account of his life as a boy is paired perfectly with Kingsbury’s signature uplifting words. This encouraging picture book will inspire readers to give their all, try their hardest, and . . . go ahead and dream!

On 1st October 2012, April Jones, aged 5, was abducted from outside her home in the small Welsh market town of Machynlleth. This led to the largest police search operation of its kind ever conducted in the UK, and a subsequent murder investigation and trial which was scrutinised by the international media. This book uses a collaborative narrative research process to explore the lived experiences of one specific group of community members who responded to this event by setting up, and running, a therapeutic project to support the community between 2012 and 2014. The author weaves together threads of the story taken from her own ethnographic journal, and co-researcher accounts, together with community updates taken from press releases and academic theory, to create an evocative narrative account that will enable readers to understand what it may be like to be involved in a therapeutic project of this kind. The book highlights some of the challenges and offers suggestions for community leaders, therapeutic practitioners and critical incident planners who may be considering setting up support in response to community trauma.
