The Fryeburg Chronicles: A Secret and A Promise After reading Book I of June O'Donal's Fryeburg Chronicles historical fiction series, I must say that I was quite eager to begin Book Two. In her remarkably well-researched work, O'Donal takes us to a simpler yet still well-established Fryeburg of 220 years ago, a time when the village was still small and when Fryeburg Academy began. Today's Academy hardly resembles the single building that sprang from that vibrant edge-of-the-wilderness community of 1792, and yet the ideals of learning and excellence are as alive today as they were then. People and settings jump from the page and take on a life of their own that magically intertwines with who we are today and how we imagine those who lived long before us. I can envision the sounds of children swimming and fishing in the river and clamoring up the school steps even as the dust from the road floats up into the leaves of the elms and maples along Main Street. I can hear the sounds of the farmyard and the voices of the families moving about their days. I can feel the immense joy and crushing sadness that our forebears often experienced and which were never far from reach. Thank you, June, for bringing our roots to life. Timothy G. Scott Director of Development Fryeburg Academy One man...one secret. Two slaves...two choices. Three brothers...one promise. Should one break man's law to obey God? This is the question the Miller family must answer for themselves in this family-friendly, historical novel.

The Fryeburg Chronicles Book V After the Battle The late Senator Benjamin Miller of Fryeburg, Maine predicted the nation would fight a civil war over the divisive issue of slavery. Could he have predicted what would become of two grandsons, a great-grandson and a dear family friend? When these four young men enlisted to fight to preserve the union, they did not envision the horrors of war. The Battle of Gettysburg changed the lives of these soldiers forever. One lost a leg, another his freedom. One lost his life and another his soul. The adversity encountered after the battle by these soldiers, their families in Fryeburg and the citizens of Gettysburg tests their fortitude and faith. Gettysburg is over. Now the real battle has begun! Novelist June O’Donal developed her love and knowledge of history while homeschooling her two children. Now a retired museum educator, she spent five years teaching hands-on history to hundreds of visitors from preschool to adult. As the founding co-director of the Currier Doll Museum and active board member of the Fryeburg Historical Society, she designs and implements educational programs for the public. She is currently researching and planning Book VI.

Volume Nine of the project documenting Thomas Jefferson's last years presents 523 documents from 1 September 1815 to 30 April 1816. In this period, Jefferson makes three trips to Poplar Forest. During two visits to the Peaks of Otter, he measures their altitude and his calculations are reprinted in several newspapers. Jefferson welcomes the returning war hero Andrew Jackson in a visit to Poplar Forest and offers a toast at a public dinner in Lynchburg held in the general's honor. With the end of the War of 1812, Jefferson uses European contacts to begin restocking his wine cellar and refilling his bookshelves. In a draft letter to Horatio G. Spafford, Jefferson indulges in a "tirade" against a pamphlet by a New England clergyman. Jefferson decides to drop the section from the letter but sends it to Richmond Enquirer publisher Thomas Ritchie with permission to publish it without Jefferson's name. An anonymous letter in the Washington Daily National Intelligencer on the interpretation of the U.S. Constitution elicits a similarly anonymous response from Jefferson. His family circle grows with the birth of a great-granddaughter. Despite a report of his death, Jefferson continues to enjoy perfect health.
