Excerpt from Baltimore County, 1929 The present volume on Baltimore County is the eleventh of the series of reports dealing with the physical features of the several counties of Maryland. In it are considerations not only of the geology and mineral resources but also the physiography, soils, climate, magnetic declination, and forests. The Introduction, by Edward W. Berry, consists of an historical review of the development of knowledge concerning the physical features of Baltimore County and a bibliography of the more important maps and reports dealing with the area. It shows that the growth of knowledge has covered a long period of preliminary exploration, begin ning with the work of Captain John Smith and culminating in the refined investigations of the complicated problems of the crystalline rocks of the Piedmont. The earlier work by Tyson and others Without modern technique shows an intuitive understanding of the region of high char acter. The later modern investigations have been by a great many workers, beginning with the classic studies of the late Professor Williams and numerous studies by students at the Johns Hopkins University. The account of The Physiography of Baltimore County by Eleanora Bliss Knopf represents an exhaustive mature investigation of the surface features of the county in connection with the topographic development of the whole terrane bordering the central Atlantic coast, This report is based upon new methods of research and is not only a clear, consistent explanation of the present surface features of Baltimore County but a distinct contribution to the scientific interpretation of the origin of the various terraces and gorges of the Piedmont area extending from New Jersey southward. The Geology of the Crystalline Rocks of Baltimore County by Eleanora Bliss Knopf and Anna I. Jonas represents the results of years of study. The authors undertook this work with a knowledge of the detailed studies and general interpretation of the region by Williams, Mathews. For 75 years, few textbooks have served a topic as well as Introduction to Forests and Renewable Resources. Widely recognized for its comprehensive yet engaging coverage, this major revision provides an outstanding, up to date overview of management issues, conservation policies and practices related to forests and renewable resources, and an authoritative perspective on how these topics are evolving. New directions are covered, including: green certification of forest management and wood products; improved harvest practices in response to public concerns; carbon sequestration and ecological services as important forest yields; ecosystem restoration and resilience as management responds to concerns about global warming; and more. Well-illustrated with new examples, case studies and abundant photos, this eighth edition describes the importance and history of forests, evolution of policy, North American distribution of forests, and moves on to describe forest health strategies to combat insects, disease, damage from mammals, and fire. Ecological principles are explained as basis for forest management, with chapters on management of the associated resources of wildlife, watersheds and streams, range resources, outdoor recreation and wilderness. Market concerns and technology are embraced in chapters on economics, measurement and analysis, harvesting, and forest products. Concluding chapters describe management of forests and renewable resources by the federal government, by states, by private land owners, and in urban areas and communities. For forestry, natural resource, and environmental science students, involved citizens and resource users and professionals, this book is your reference and guide to forests and renewable resources.
