Excerpt from The American Flower Garden What is a garden?' It is man's report of earth at her best. It is earth emancipated from the commonplace. It is man's love of loveliness carried to excess man's craving for the ideal grown to a fine lunacy. It is piquant won derment; culminated beauty that, for all its combination of telling and select items, can still contrive to look natural, debonair, native to its place. Excerpt from The Flower Garden Again, while the permanent garden is beautiful in itself, it is not suitable for the lawn and greatly mars the eflect of the grounds. Beds of ornamental foliage plants - Cannas, Ricinus, Coleus, and the like - appropriately placed, add much to the beauty of a well-kept lawn, but should be carefully considered in relation to its size and the trees and shrubbery already there. Excerpt from Colour in the Flower Garden I am strongly of opinion that the possession of a quantity of plants, however good the plants may be themselves and however ample their number, does not make a garden it only makes a collection. Having got the plants, the great thing is to use them with careful selection and definite intention. Merely having them, or having them planted unassorted in garden. Spaces, is only like having a box of paints from the best colourman, or, to go one step further, it is like having portions of these paints set out upon a palette. This does not constitute a picture; and it seems to me that the duty we owe to our gardens and to our own bettering in our gardens is so to use the plants that they shall form beautiful pictures; and that, while delighting our eyes, they should be always training those eyes to a more exalted criticism to a state of mind and artistic conscience that will not tolerate bad or careless combination or any sort of misuse of plants, but in which it becomes a point of honour to be always striving for the best. It is just in the way it is done that lies the whole difference between commonplace gardening and gar dening that may rightly claim to rank as a fine art. Given the same space of ground and the same material, they may either be fashioned into a dream of beauty, a place of perfect rest and refreshment of mind and body - a series of soul-satisfying pictures - a treasure of well-set jewels; or they may be so misused that everything is jarring and displeasing. To learn how to perceive the difference and how to do right is to apprehend gardening as a fine art. In practice it is to place every plant or group of plants with such thoughtful care and definite intention that they shall form apart of a harmonious whole, and that successive portions, or in some cases even single details, shall show a series of pictures. It is so to regulate the trees and undergrowth of the wood that their lines and masses come into beautiful form and harmonious proportion; it is to be always watching, noting and doing, and putting oneself meanwhile into closest acquaintance and sympathy with the growing things. Excerpt from The American Flower Garden Companion: Adapted to the Northern States The first and second editions of the Flow Garden Compa nion having received a liberal patronage, will be a sufficient apology for the appearance of the present edition, in an enlarged form, although not materially different in its arrangement. The present Object, as heretofore, of the Flower Garden Companion, is to aid those persons who are desirous of becoming acquainted with the culture of flowers. In its compilation, the aim has been to give, within the compass of a convenient manual for reference, as much useful matter as possible relative to the subject. To this end, each topic has been separately treated, and in as concise a manner as could be done with propriety; and, indeed, in some cases, with a degree of brevity that on the first reading, to the young practitioner may produce a feeling of disappointment, at the apparent deficiency of information; but on a careful reading Of the different articles, it will be found that everything useful (in so small a treatise) has been Spoken of, and that, in many instances, one article acts as a key to another. In the outset, directions are given for laying out flower gardens. In treating on this subject, I have confined myself to the general outline, without entering into minute details, which depend very much upon location and circumstances, as well as upon the taste and means of the proprietor. Excerpt from The Practical Flower Garden The chapter on the Wild Garden owes its being to the maker of the Connecticut Gar den, who has given me frequent opportunities of watching its development, and much of the information contained in the chapter. To him also I am indebted for the beautiful photo graphs which may serve as an inspiration to those who would find delight in creating a similar garden of native plants and shrubs. Excerpt from The Handbook to the Flower Garden and Greenhouse The third edition of this work presented such a total change from the first two that it could hardly be recognised, and at the eleventh hour I had merely an Opportunity of disclaiming all the alterations. In revising the work for the fourth edition I have removed nearly eighty pages which were taken from, and belonged to, botanical dictionaries, and have restored much that had been taken away to make room for matter not original. I have not disturbed the alphabetical arrangement, although I have expunged the names of many genera and species of no earthly use to the florist; for I consider the work belongs to the popular flowers, and not to botanical collections, besides which I have a thorough deep-rooted aversion to Copying from others. I trust I have improved even upon the original edition, and at least have the satisfaction of knowing it is all my own.
