Excerpt from The Flower and the Star, and Other Stories for Children Clumps of oaks with their old twisted bran ches, and long avenues of smooth-skinned beeches with their graceful boughs droop ing to the ground, and birches with their flickering foliage and white stems like silver in the sunlight; and there were many other trees besides. And the great boughs arched over like the roof of some grand cathedral; and the wind made music there; and the light played in and out among the leaves, leaping through the green windows, chas ing the wind. When the wind blew through the leaves, in came the light; and the wind shouted out, and the light laughed; and then the birds sang as if they were play mates too; and the children laughed, enjoy ing the forest pleasures. And the forest was so full of all sweet sounds, - the glad voices of happy creatures! It won't take you long to see why Jane Tyson Clement's short stories have become perennial favorites for adults and children alike. Written with a measured beauty that recalls Tolstoy and Tolkien, these tales are rich in allegorical symbolism and evocation of mood. They are infused throughout with the thrill of expectancy, a sense that something new is on the way, and a certainty that God is seeking us, just as we seek him. In an age where cleverness often counts more than substance, Clement's stories offer a break from all the noise.

William James Linton (1812-1897) was an English-born American wood engraver, political reformer and author of memoirs, novels, poetry and non-fiction. When he was sixteen Linton was apprenticed to the wood-engraver George Wilmot Bonner. After working as a journeyman engraver with two or three firms, he went into partnership in 1842 with John Orrin Smith. For years he had concerned himself with the social and European political problems of the time, and was actively engaged in the republican propaganda. In 1844 he took a prominent part in exposing the violation by the English post office of Mazzini's correspondence. In 1852, he printed for private circulation an anonymous volume of poems entitled The Plaint of Freedom. Amongst his other works are Claribel and Other Poems (1865), James Watson (1879), The Flower and the Star and Other Stories (1891) and Memories (1895).
