A History of Latinx Performing Arts in the U.S. provides a comprehensive overview of the development of the Latinx performing arts in what is now the U.S. since the sixteenth century. This book combines theories and philosophical thought developed in a wide spectrum of disciplines—such as anthropology, sociology, gender studies, feminism, and linguistics, among others—and productions’ reviews, historical context, and political implications. Split into two volumes, these books offer interpretations and representations of a wide range of Latinxs’ lived experiences in the U.S. Volume I provides a chronological overview of the evolution of the Latinx community within the U.S., spanning from the 1500s to today, with an emphasis on the Chicano artistic renaissance initiated by Luis Valdez and the Teatro Campesino in the 1960s. Volume II continues, looking more in depth at the experiences of Latinx individuals on theatre and performance, including Miguel Piñero, Lin-Manuel Miranda, María Irene Fornés, Nilo Cruz, and John Leguizamo, as well as the important role of transnational migration in Latinx communities and identities across the U.S. A History of Latinx Performing Arts in the U.S. offers an accessible and comprehensive understanding of the field and is ideal for students, researchers, and instructors of theatre studies with an interest in the diverse and complex history of Latinx theatre and performance.

A selective list of publications for the period, offering some 25,200 entries (no annotations) arranged by nationality and linguistic groups. Most entries concern literary currents in drama since the last third of the 19th century, playwrights who lived at least part of their lives in the 20th century, noted directors, and performance theory. For students and scholars of modern dramatic literature. While annual supplements of recent publications appear in the journal Modern Drama, new compilers took a publication date of 1991 as their starting point for listings, leaving some 2,000 items collected after 1992 appearing only in this volume. Phoenix's Mexican American community dates back to the founding of the city in 1868. From these earliest days, Phoenicians of Mexican descent actively participated in the city's economic and cultural development, while also fiercely preserving their culture and heritage in the thriving barrios, by establishing their own businesses and churches. In 1886, Henry Garfias became the first member of the Mexican community to be elected a city official. The 20th century saw the creation of organizations, such as La Liga Protectora and Sociedad Zaragoza, that gave a stronger political voice to the underrepresented Mexican population. In 1953, another member of the Mexican community, Adam Diaz, was elected to city council. As the century progressed, the Mexican American population grew and expanded into several areas of Phoenix, and today the substantial community is flourishing.

Full color publication. Highlights the Hispanic imprint on the built environment of the United States. This effort by the National Park Service and partners aims to increase the awareness of the historic places associated with the nation's cultural and ethnic groups that are identified, documented, recognized, and interpreted. These constitute the foundation for Hispanic Reflections. Many of the examples are drawn from National Park Service cultural resources programs in partnership with other government agencies and private organizations.
