Excerpt from The First Chapter of Genesis, as the Rock Foundation for Science and Religion It is remarkable fact in connection with both science and religion that the teachers in both realms have persistently overlooked the provision God has made that each should supplement the other. His evident intention is that science should enlarge the borders of the religious sphere and that the Bible as a teacher of religion should not only keep abreast of scientific attainment but even lead the way to higher intellectual results. While this is true of the whole Bible it is particularly so of the opening chapter of that book. In earlier ages it served as an exercise of faith that was reasonable only because it formed a part of records that all through the ages have been regarded as the word of God and that all along bore the imprints of the Maker of all things. But in an age when science has advanced so as more nearly to comprehend its truth, it stands as a monument to a wisdom more than human. As such it lends its warrant to other records that are based upon it. But before proceeding to develop thoughts along this line it may be well to outline a brief summary of the argument. Consider first the cosmogony of Genesis I. Geology has already established some propositions that are universally acknowledged to be correct. 1st. The earth was once covered with water and everything was at a very high temperature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Genesis and Science, or the First Leaves of the Bible Where I could not adopt their arguments or make their conclusions my own, I endeavoured to show, from what are deemed authoritative statements, how great is the confusion among themselves, and how utterly without weight and value, in consequence, must be the assertions hazarded by scientists against the Book of Genesis. If censured, as I shall be, for not recklessly deciding some of the burning questions of the day, I shall quietly submit and take it very patiently. Is there not a time for everything '3 If revelation has long since closed its canon, certainly science has not, and before this is done, it is vain to apprehend danger for the cause of truth. See and celebrate the multilayered grandeur conveyed by the first chapter of Genesis The first chapter of the Bible's first book lays the foundation for all that follows about who God is and what God is like. Our technology-age fascination with the science of origins, however, can blind us to issues of great importance that don't address our culturally conditioned questions. Instead, Genesis One itself suggests the questions and answers that are most significant to human faith and flourishing. Geologist Gregg Davidson and theologian Ken Turner shine a spotlight on Genesis One as theologically rich literature first and foremost, exploring the layers of meaning that showcase various aspects of God's character: Song Analogy Polemic Covenant Temple Calendar Land Our very knowledge of God suffers when we fail to appreciate the Bible's ability to convey multilayered truth simultaneously. The Manifold Beauty of Genesis One offers readers the chance to cultivate an openness to Scripture's richness and a deeper faith in the Creator.
