Portraits of Early Sonoma County Settlers is the narrative history of sixteen early settlers in the area which is now Sonoma County, California. A number of these persons arrived before California became a state in 1850. A number of them were lured here by the Gold Rush of 1849. They engaged in wide and diverse activities. Several were directly or indirectly involved in the settlement and development of new towns in the area. Others contributed to the development of agriculture, schools, and religion. Some of them had to deal with the Mexican Government and the ranchos in early Alta California. Overall it gives a good picture of what the area was like as it moved towards and became a part of the United States of America.

Covering the beautiful sprawl of Sonoma County, from Sebastopol and the coast to Healdsburg and Windsor and through Santa Rosa, Sonoma, and Petaluma, author Lee Torliatt offers readers a glimpse of the vivid and lively activities of the region's athletes and teams over 100-plus years. These photographs and images trace the accomplishments of the county's pivotal figures in football, baseball, track, basketball, boxing, ice hockey, tennis, and other sports. Fans will recognize names like Ernie Nevers, a football hero at Santa Rosa High School, and track giant Ralph Rose of Healdsburg, a major Olympian who was struck down by tragedy early in the 20th century. Captured here is the famous upset when the Bonecrushers and Leghorns met in 1948, the short-lived but glorious years of an ice hockey team imported from Canada, the local enthusiasts who enjoyed hunting and fishing, the early female athletes of the region from the 1850s to 1952, and several legendary heroes of their times, including Helen Wightman, Smith Robinson, and Joe DeMaggio (before he was DiMaggio.)

This timely book provides the inside story of the development of mobile public alert and warning technology in the United States and addresses similar systems being used in Australia, Canada, Japan, and the Netherlands. This book provides a comprehensive account of how mobile-smartphone systems are transforming the practice of public alert and warning in the United States. Recent events have vaulted mobile alert and warning technology to the forefront of public debates concerning the hazards of the digital age. False alarms of ballistic missile attacks on Hawaii and Japan, the non-use of mobile alerts during the Northern California wildfires, and the role this technology plays in supporting police manhunts and counterterrorism efforts have prompted reconsideration of how these systems are used. Drawing upon interviews with officials, executives, experts, and citizens, the book provides an in-depth analysis of the events and contexts influencing the trajectory of mobile public alert and warning and charts a course for its improvement. The book first introduces readers to the high stakes involved in the transformation of public alert and warning, explaining how new research is revealing the benefits, limitations, and risks of mobile technology in the disaster communication context. Three case studies then illustrate issues of risk, trust, and appropriateness in mobile public alert and warning.
