Growing up in an aristocratic family that seems almost to have stepped out of the pages of The Leopard, Leoluca Orlando entered law and politics in the late 1970s as one of the young idealists identified with the Catholic Church who were challenging the Mafia’s control of Sicilian life. At about the same moment, life in Sicily was becoming more perilous. As if the “old” Mafia had not been bad enough, a new and particularly vicious Mafia sect based in the town of Corleone was murdering its way to power. Fueled by profits from the international heroin trade, this mafia gansteristica made Sicily into an Italian Lebanon and filled the international press with pictures of bloody bodies—those of Mafia rivals as well as police and government law enforcement officials. One of the figures most prominently identified with Italy’s offensive against the Mafia, Orlando has endured repeated assassination attempts and even today travels with a bodyguard. Fighting the Mafia is his dramatic tale of witness and survival, of his effort to expose Mafia infiltration into the highest levels of Italian life and politics, and of the movements he helped to build—in schools and churches and at the ballot box—to recapture Sicilian culture and inspire a renaissance of democracy.

In the wake of the clergy abuse scandal of the last decade, many media commentators predicted the “end” of the Catholic priesthood. Demands for an end to celibacy, coupled with calls for women’s ordination, dominated discussions on the effectiveness of the Catholic Church in America. Renewal argues that rather than a decline of the priesthood and a diminishing influence of the Catholic Church, we are living in a time of transformation and revitalization. The aging generation of progressives that continues to lobby Church leaders to change Catholic teachings on reproductive rights, same-sex marriage and women's ordination is being replaced by younger men and women who are attracted to the Church because of the very timelessness of its teachings.

The Renewal of Epic considers various modes of allusion to Homer in the Argonautica of Apollonius, dealing not only with similarities in phraseology but also with thematic and structural resemblances. After an introduction, two chapters discuss Apollonian techniques in treating repeated Homeric scenes: sacrifice, shipwreck, boxing and battle. The central section of the work considers the multiple links between the adventures of the Argonauts and Odysseus' wanderings. A final chapter explores Apollonius' innovative treatment of the divine, both generally and in particular scenes. The work shows convincingly that the Argonautica reproduces many of the patterns which have been found in the Iliad and Odyssey. It demonstrates the presence of allusion at every level in the poem, linking it to its predecesors and acting as an essential interpretative aid to the reader.

This is the devotional I wish I had when I was a young Christian boy growing in the faith. As a young teenager, I was unsure what this new life was supposed to be. I struggled between the two worlds of wanting to be accepted by my peers and this new idea of being a Christian. At only 13 I desperately wanted to know Jesus, the real Jesus of the Bible. I read feverishly through the Word. Memorizing and highlighting. But with no mentor, and no older Christian brothers, I lost my zeal. I still wanted to know Jesus, but I was easily pulled into the world because of my desire to have others accept me. The world left me empty and disillusioned, every time. And every time I would limp back to the loving arms of my Father. All I wanted was for someone to take an interest in me, to love me, to mentor me, to show me what manhood was all about, and to know the Biblical view of who God created me to be. This devotional was born out of years of mentoring youth, teenagers, and young adults. I believe this is what God has called me to do: To help the next generation of men live the supernatural lives God intended them to live. Many of the entries end with a prayer. These prayers are designed to encourage, exhort, and or activate your faith. Please feel free to take the spirit of each prayer to inform a prayer of your own. Are you ready?
