Here are the most recent developments in clinical research and theory on the role of the family in understanding and treating chronic mental and physical illnesses. Internationally respected scholars and psychotherapists present comprehensive and authoritative information vital to professionals who work with families coping with severe disorders. Chronic Disorders and the Family explores how clinicians can become more aware of the common experiences of patients and their families struggling with chronic psychiatric and medical disorders, thus promoting a better understanding of the contribution of family dynamics. With its focus on the interactional nature of psychopathology, this important book encourages psychotherapists to compare and contrast the various treatment perspectives and approaches available. Specific disorders discussed include schizophrenia, clinical depression, borderline disorders, anxiety disorders (particularly agoraphobia), eating disorders, substance abuse, and chronic medical illnesses.

Different research approaches to schizophrenia have evolved conflicting etiological theories, variously emphasizing genetic, biochemical, physiological, and psychological aspects, all reviewed in this volume. Included are considerations of prenatal environment (L. W. Sontag), psychological studies (C. L. Winder), anxiety and perception (P. McReynolds), social relations (J. A. Clausen & M. L. Kohn), and family roles (T. Lidz, S. Fleck, M. Bowen, & J. H. Weakland). M. J. Boatman and S. A. Szurek report a clinical study of childhood schizophrenia. In an introductory overview, D. D. Jackson discusses convergent approaches and theoretical implications. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2004 APA, all rights reserved).

The definitive treatment textbook in psychiatry, this fifth edition of Gabbard's Treatments of Psychiatric Disorders has been thoroughly restructured to reflect the new DSM-5® categories, preserving its value as a state-of-the-art resource and increasing its utility in the field. The editors have produced a volume that is both comprehensive and concise, meeting the needs of clinicians who prefer a single, user-friendly volume. In the service of brevity, the book focuses on treatment over diagnostic considerations, and addresses both empirically-validated treatments and accumulated clinical wisdom where research is lacking. Noteworthy features include the following: Content is organized according to DSM-5® categories to make for rapid retrieval of relevant treatment information for the busy clinician. Outcome studies and expert opinion are presented in an accessible way to help the clinician know what treatment to use for which disorder, and how to tailor the treatment to the patient. Content is restricted to the major psychiatric conditions seen in clinical practice while leaving out less common conditions and those that have limited outcome research related to the disorder, resulting in a more streamlined and affordable text. Chapters are meticulously referenced and include dozens of tables, figures, and other illustrative features that enhance comprehension and recall. An authoritative resource for psychiatrists, psychologists, and psychiatric nurses, and an outstanding reference for students in the mental health professions, Gabbard's Treatments of Psychiatric Disorders, Fifth Edition, will prove indispensable to clinicians seeking to provide excellent care while transitioning to a DSM-5® world.

This is the first book to address the clinical and neurobiological interface between schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). There is growing evidence that obsessive-compulsive symptoms in schizophrenia are prevalent, persistent and characterized by a distinct pattern of familial inheritance, neurocognitive deficits and brain activation. This text provides guidelines for differential diagnosis of schizophrenic patients with obsessive-compulsive symptoms, and patients with primary OCD alongside poor insight, psychotic features or schizotypal personality. Written by a leading expert in the coexistence of obsessive-compulsive and schizophrenic phenomena, Schizo-Obsessive Disorder uses numerous case studies to present diagnostic guidelines and to describe a recommended treatment algorithm, demystifying this complex disorder and aiding its effective management. The book is essential reading for psychiatrists, neurologists and the wider range of multidisciplinary mental health practitioners.

In the autumn of 1957, Stanley R. Dean proposed the creation of a founda tion on schizophrenia to a group of friends. The purpose was to bring the illness of schizophrenia before the public's attention and out of the shameful anonymity in which it was buried. Stanley Dean recognized the major public health importance of this illness and was determined to have an impact on it during his lifetime. By December of that year, the decision was made to create an organization called Research in Schizophrenia Endowment (RISE). Within less than two months articles of incorporation for RISE were issued by the State of Connecticut. By the latter part of March 1958, Dean was successful in getting Congress to provide $1,300,000 for research into schizophrenia. This was the first time that Congress had targeted funds specifically for research on this disorder. Within a year, by April 1959, Dr. Dean was instrumental in getting Congress to increase its appro priation to the NIMH by more than $8,000,000 with the specific instruction that approximately one-half of the total research funds of the NIMH be used for projects relating to schizophrenia. In the spring of 1960, RISE relinquished its corporate charter and became an integral part of the Research Foundation of the National Association for Mental Health. This merger occurred before RISE had implemented its planned annual award program for outstanding research in schizophrenia. Several members of the Board of Directors of RISE, under the leadership of Dr. James G.
