Excerpt from The Faith of Robert Louis Stevenson No apology is needed for another book concerning Robert Louis Stevenson. It would be impossible to have too much of him; and while his faith has been touched upon in passing by most of those who have written about him, it has never yet been selected for special and detailed study. But a large, and for the most part a very excellent, literature has for the past nine years been gathering round his personality and his work, so that the difficulty grows ever greater for a new writer. How much may be taken for granted? How much must be explained? It may be expected that some will read this book who are intimately acquainted with the subject, and others to whom it is almost wholly unknown. It is an arduous task that lies before him who would offer anything of even the slightest value to both these classes. Yet I venture to hope that what I have written may tempt some to enter one of the richest and most delightful regions in modern English literature, and may interest others to whom that region is already familiar. I have to thank Mr. Graham Balfour for his generous and cordial permission to make use of his Biography - a permission of which I have availed myself with obvious freedom. Excerpt from Robert Louis Stevenson Robert Louis Stevenson vii.close friendships with the Samoan missionaries. Yet he was by no means orthodox, either in ethics or in religion. Much as he wrote on conduct, there were certain subjects, and these the most difficult, on which he never spoke out. On love, for example, and all that goes with it, it is quite certain that he never spoke his full mind - to the public at least. Excerpt from Robert Louis Stevenson: With Numerous Illustrations Not observe the niceties of technical litera ture. The far greater disadvantage of Stevenson is that he did. Because he had a conscience about small matters in art, he is conceived not to have had an imagination about big ones. It is assumed by some that he must have been a bad architect, and the only reason that they can assign is that he was a good workman. The mistake which has given rise to this conception is one that has much to answer for in numerous depart ments of modern art, literature, religion, philosophy, and politics. The supreme and splendid characteristic of Stevenson was his levity; and his levity was the flower of a hundred grave philosophies. The strong man is always light: the weak man is always heavy. A swift and casual agility is the mark of bodily strength: a humane levity is the mark of spiritual strength. A thor oughly strong man swinging a sledge-hammer. Excerpt from R. L. Stevenson and Henry Drummond Their rebellion was not polemic but psychic. They had a dislike to the kind of manhood produced by Calvinism: it was too lank and grim for their taste. They had an ideal of a fuller and lovelier manliness and for its realization desired fresh air, evolving emotion, and dignifying spirituality.
